Sandbox MMO Anvil Empires previews chunks of its smithing and weaponcrafting systems

The latest Anvil Empires dev blog is all about making the pointy end part of “stick ’em with the pointy end” as the Siege Camp devs discuss the in-development MMORPG’s bronze weaponry.

“Up until now, the progression for tools & weapons in the Pre-Alpha has been relatively short and flat meaning that Settlements would go from using basic early Age weapons like Flint Knives directly to Iron Swords without much intermediate content along the way,” the studio explains. “As part of the next phase of development, these gaps in the progression will begin to be filled in. This will start with the introduction Bronze equipment, which includes a Bronze Sword, Pickaxe, Spear, Axe, and Knife. Their effectiveness will sit between Flint and Iron items.”

The team warns would-be testers that the current crafting process for these tools is just a “stepping stone” for the “full Smithing game”; right now, the system includes smelting, hammers, and anvils, but not forging and quenching or requirements like workshop areas.

“The introduction of Bronze equipment and an early Smithing game aren’t necessarily the most new and exciting features to be seen in a game that includes crafting elements but are rather an important step as we work towards a more complete economy progression for the Anvil Empires,” the team admits, but of course, we’d expect nothing less from a proper sandbox.
