The Daily Grind: Should MMOs repurpose their old content more often?

World of Warcraft certainly provoked the raising of many, many eyebrows last week when it announced that its secret March patch ended up being a pirate-themed battle royale mode that repurposed the Arathi Highlands map for a crazy mass competition.

It wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and to be honest, it wasn’t mine either. But I still give the idea a thumbs-up of approval because I think it’s smart when an MMO takes older content and gives it a new purpose. It’s also kind of fun for the players to revisit long-ago zones with a new twist.

So should MMOs repurpose older content and zones more often? How would you like your game to do this?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
