Just because Ubisoft planted an “End of Road” sign for its open world racer The Crew doesn’t mean that fans are content to turn off the engine and let their virtual cars fall into disrepair.
In fact, there’s an effort already underway to revive the shuttered game after Ubisoft took it offline and out of players’ libraries. This movement isn’t unexpected, as there’s been some severe pushback to the studio’s indifference to player ownership of a purchased title.
The fan project is being called The Crew Revival and seeks to help reconnect the 12 million players who purchased the title over its lifespan. Eurogamer interviewed one of the volunteer developers of the effort to create a rogue server, although a specific timeline of when players might expect this to go live was not shared (there are hopes that it will happen by The Crew’s 10th anniversary in December).
However, the dev did emphasize that this is an important fight in the battle for game preservation, saying, “The reception [to The Crew Revival] from people who are both familiar and unfamiliar with the game has been greatly positive, as they are happy to see the game be revived, and be preserved, like all games deserve to be.”
