Star Trek Online hints at a new ship bundle with mysterious teaser images paired with a cipher

What’s a good way to draw hype for an upcoming reveal for Star Trek Online? Offer fans a mystery, apparently: The MMO’s Twitter account has posted three different intriguing teasers over the past few weeks that have sent players of the game into a small flurry of puzzle-solving and guessing among themselves.

The images in question appear to use rudimentary image editing to reference older games in the IP’s catalogue, namely Star Trek: Armada, Star Trek: Invasion, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Dominion Wars, along with a series of numbers that would suggest a spelled-out message.

Players on Twitter and on Reddit have been working to break these ciphers and have come to the conclusion that these are teasing a new ship bundle that packs in spacecraft from older games: Two particularly sleuthy Redditors have worked out the word “bundle” from the numbers strings, with some of the more popularly held assumptions being that STO will be getting the Premonition, Typhon and Achilles.

According to senior community manager Ambassador Kael, only one player has figured out what the codes mean (it’s possible the “Hi MrZJones” found in the second cipher is referencing who that player was), so we’re all going to have to wait and see whether fans have sussed out the mystery. If nothing else, this has appeared to be a fun bit of ARG for players to dig around in.
