If Myth of Empires always whispered to you but you’ve not wanted to shell out 30 bucks to try it, this weekend’s free-play event is for you: Angel Game is opening the game up to all comers from today through August 5th – or at least the base game.

“The Free Weekend offers survival game enthusiasts a chance to try out the Myth of Empires base game at no cost, with events boosting Proficiency and resource collection rates,” the studio says. “Myth of Empires and its DLCs will also be discounted from August 1 until August 8. The base game and the Dongzhou Map DLC will be offered for 50% off, with the Royal Carriages Pack and Musical Instruments Pack receiving 30% discounts. During this time, the official in-game shop will offer some items for 20% off, as well.”

Today’s press release calls the game an “open-world survival crafting game,” but make no mistake, it’s a survival MMO, flagged MMO on Steam. It launched back in February as a survival-strategy spin on the MMO genre; MOP’s Fight or Kite columnist Sam found it to be a solid game, especially in the early gameplay stages, if not as compelling as its trailers. At release, the game pulled in a peak concurrency of over 34,000 players, though that’s dipped to around 6,000 by this summer. Reviews, however, have stayed mostly positive – quite a feat for a survival sandbox these days.
