Remember last week how I mentioned that I couldn’t muster much in the way of anger toward Throne & Liberty having its whole paid access kicking off before everyone got in for a free-to-play title? This is part of why. Sure, that is a not super awesome decision in various ways, but then we get news about how Star Citizen is crunching its workers to make a convention for the game happen. You know, the game that has been in paid testing for like a decade with no release date in sight while bragging about the money it brings from selling ships that don’t exist yet. Super!
In other news, if you missed it, Throne & Liberty has fully launched now, so everyone can play it, and that means it’s departing our list. SMITE 2 has also added two more deities to its roster, Baron Samedi and Yemoja. And Old School RuneScape has changes to the Guardians of the Rift that are currently in testing because calling that a “beta” sounds classier than “test server,” I guess? Like, the developers aren’t wrong to think that.
Is there other stuff to discuss in terms of beta news? Absolutely, but there is only so much time to write up weekly summaries of these things, and thus I direct you down below to our roundup of beta news. We’ve also got a full list of games in testing below that; let us know if something is missing from the list, or if a game slipped to a different phase of testing without us catching it!
We consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s often under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed, nor will games that are NFT/blockchain scams; we also do not list expansions, with occasional exceptions. Finally, we’ll mark games “malingering” if they’ve been in a certain tier of development for a long time with no clear path to launch.

Yes, MMO gamers, you too can perform the unpaid quality-control work otherwise known as game testing! Check out Massively Overpowered’s Betawatch every week for a run-down of MMOs that are still on the road to launch, even if they appear to have set up a permanent residence in a shed called early access.
