PlanetSide 2 has officially launched its fishing minigame today (and no, not April Fools)

So listen, when an MMO developer chooses April 1st to introduce cozy content to a PvP title, it’s usually an April Fools’ Day prank. But believe it or not, that it not actually the case with today’s PlanetSide 2 update, which adds fishing to the game.

We know this because the Toadman/Daybreak/Toadbreak unit actually put fishing on the PTS last September and then reiterated tuning for fishing back in January. As of today, it’s actually launching on the live servers, complete with fishing mastery and specific rewards, including decals, camo, and a sweet fishing hat. I mean, why even bother if you can’t get a cool hat.

As we previously noted, the fishing system is basically a scan-and-log system whereby you’ll launch probes for a fish-locating minigame and thereby fill your fish log. In other words, it’s surprisingly in-universe and not going to break your MMOFPS immersion.

Note that PS2 is celebrating April Fools’ Day with the addition of themed items in the Depot; our favorite is the new “BRRRT” horn, which, we can only assume, goes BRRRT.
