It’s the longest of all long shots, but WildStar could be kept alive — and in a museum, as Indiana Jones intended. And not just the soon-to-be canceled MMO, but previously sunsetted ones such as Star Wars Galaxies and City of Heroes as well.
With the recent DMCA ruling allowing for the preservation of online games, the Video Game Museum said that it is open to giving shuttered MMOs a home within its walls. The caveat? It would need the server code for these games to be handed over from the legal owners.
“If anyone has dead MMO server code out there, and wants us to lock it away for a few years until it’s clear to relaunch the server, or if you’re ready for us to reboot it right now, let us know,” the museum said. “[It] must be a legitimately acquired copy of the server code.”
The museum specifically put out a call for SWG and CoH’s server code and was open to fans’ suggestions that Asheron’s Call, The Matrix Online, and WildStar be given a berth in the building as well.
For those begging for WildStar to be saved, MADE replied, “If you folks can convince the developers and owners to hand over the server software, we can rehost it. That’s a tall order, but if they agree, we can bring it back. Y’all should band together and ask as a group.”
The volunteers weren’t deterred by the difficulty of bringing such games back online, saying that “nothing could be more technically challenging” than what it did by restoring the 1988 proto-MMO Habitat.
Hey Twitter fans: please go track down people who could legally get us Star Wars Galaxy's server code, and City of Heroes server code. If they agree to hand over the server code, we can bring those games back online legally.
