Regular readers will note that Final Fantasy XIV earned our MMORPG of the Year award last year, with many of the staff citing the game’s regular, steady updates as the reason for its win. It seems those updates will keep coming for the foreseeable future, as an interview with the German language publication Spieletipps from Gamescom revealed that XIV will not be getting a sequel and will very likely be the last Final Fantasy-branded MMORPG.
The interview with producer/director Naoki Yoshida and head writer Banri Oda stated that the devs will keep on supporting XIV exclusively, with “no prospect of a new online offshoot” as stated in an automatic translation. Square Enix is also apparently on board with the idea, fully backing the MMORPG and “[adhering] to the concept of the game.” Yoshida and Oda also said that Square Enix will keep Final Fantasy XIV a subscription-based game with an optional items store, citing that the business model continues to be the most fair to players and continues to sustain the MMORPG’s seemingly unshakeable update cadence.
In short, prepare to celebrate The Rising for many years to come.
