The Daily Grind: Which MMO companies care about game preservation?

With game preservation back in the news thanks to Ubisoft’s The Crew criming and the Stop Killing Games initiative, I thought it would be useful to consider which MMO companies are already ahead of the curve when it comes to this topic.

The most obvious company that comes to mind here in 2024 is NCsoft, as it essentially let the City of Heroes servers run unopposed for the last five years and then codified Homecoming with an official license.

But of course there are others that deserve some kudos, like Daybreak (which licensed Project 1999 and delivers winks and nods to other emus of its dead games). Or companies like TinySpeck, which open-sourced all of Glitch’s assets so the players could make it live on.

There are still others that have open-sourced their code, celebrated emulation, or even promised fans access when and if they finally close down. Tell me about them: Which MMO companies have proven they care about game preservation? Who deserves support for doing the right thing long before now?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
