We are now truly liberated from talking about the Throne & Liberty beta because the game has launched. You might want to point out that technically it has launched its paid headstart and the full launch hasn’t yet happened, to which I would reply that that’s a launch; it’s just a phased launch to make people upset based on their disposable income. Still, better than a limited headstart for an expansion to an existing game, and since ArcheAge 2 just rebranded to ArcheAge Chronicles while seemingly removing a lot of the things that actually made a sequel to ArcheAge sound like a good idea… yeah, y’know what, a limited headstart just doesn’t earn much opprobrium from me today. But it does count as a launch!
Elsewhere in the wild, Fragpunk has revealed that its closed beta will take place from October 10th through the 21st, complete with full crossplay. Also, Dreamworld re-inserted itself into the narrative with an October 10th date for moving onto Steam, so that’s just… so bizarre you have to wonder, right? Oh, it’s using AI tools, too, just in case your head didn’t hurt enough yet. And The Quinfall has started another closed beta test today, which means that we can all wonder what happens when Quin impacts with the ground. (That’s not what the game is about, I know.)
In hindsight, I should have saved my joke about Throne & Liberty’s fuzzy tummy for this week, but it’s too late now. But if you forgot about it, you’ll have to go back and read last week’s column… but it’s this week’s column with a full roundup of beta news down below, plus a full list of games in testing. The paralysis of choice!
We consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s often under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed, nor will games that are NFT/blockchain scams; we also do not list expansions, with occasional exceptions. Finally, we’ll mark games “malingering” if they’ve been in a certain tier of development for a long time with no clear path to launch.

Yes, MMO gamers, you too can perform the unpaid quality-control work otherwise known as game testing! Check out Massively Overpowered’s Betawatch every week for a run-down of MMOs that are still on the road to launch, even if they appear to have set up a permanent residence in a shed called early access.
