Star Citizen shows off new character creation choices and successfully crams dozens of players into a tram

As one might expect, Star Citizen is heads-down focusing on the arrival of CitizenCon (and stealing developers’ weekends to do it), which basically means there are just a few tidbits to share from the alpha sandbox for the time being, but some possibly interesting ones all the same.

First off, alpha 3.24.2 is going to vastly expand and diversify its character creation choices, with 21 new head shapes and the promise of new hairstyles, tattoos, and beards. And things are looking varied indeed, with a wide assortment of ethnicities and ages being showcased in the preview.

Next is the latest progress report from CIG’s ongoing server meshing tests. Test D managed to cram over 900 people into one server without issues, but once player counts got higher, things started to crash, and congestion for habs and personal hangars was still “egregious.” Even so, the game managed to stuff dozens of folks into trams and saw multiple players running around at landing zone areas.

Finally, the game’s weekly schedule notes a Squadron 42 progress report for tomorrow, October 9th, will be posted on the website. Readers will recall that this single-player release is feature-complete and in polishing phase, so presumably there will be lots of polished things happening. More wrinkled sheets, perhaps.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $700M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
