Guild Wars 2’s Scrapper turns the Engineer into a tank

Guild Wars 2’s Engineer has long been the master of long-ranged attacks, using rifles, turrets, grenades, pistols, and other gadgets to bring the pain to enemies. ArenaNet is going to shake up that paradigm with the class’ upcoming elite specialization, the Scrapper.

The Scrapper takes on the role of a tank by using a two-handed hammer in up-close-and-personal attacks. The specialization will receive additional traits, new skills, and little flying mechs to help in the fight. Some of the skills that the Scrapper can use in battle include rocket charge, shock shield, and thunderclap.

ArenaNet will be showing off the Scrapper in action in its Points of Interest livestream tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. Now that the Engineer’s elite spec is revealed, can the Druid’s be far behind?

Radfist digi_owl Yeah the Rev do seem to be what GW2 could have been had they not done the asinine thing of forgoing mana/energy costs. End result is that anything interest has a prohibitive cooldown, and so rarely if ever gets used. Instead people run circles while spamming 1-3 on the keyboard.

DahkohtLewin The expansion is out on october 23rd and every elite specialization, including this one comes with it

“Tank-like” abilities does not mean tank. We already played this sick joke before when Guild Wars 2 was coming out wait until they blatantly say that it’s a tank.

digi_owl They just mean melee. The only class who will be able to properly tank based on the current elite specs betas will be Revenant thanks to spam taunt.  They will also be the only class to main heal with spam heals.

So is there a specific date something like this would go live ? Only played GW2 a little at launch , this class type would interest me and might play it some just to get further in the game and see some of the sites.

To be honest, this is most interesting thing about GW2 class stuff I have seen. I may check into this if it turns out great as it seems.

Quincha data mining doesn’t take much effort with the right tool, its like spreading peanut butter on a toasted bread with a fat butter knife. Anyone can do it.

Budukahn We’ll have to wait and see to find out for certain, but the design philosophy behind the elite specs was that they are not replacements of the core specs, just alternatives. They’re not supposed to render the core specs irrelevant, so I’d say, depending on what you’re doing, engi is supposed to remain viable.

However I stand by my comments that they need a clear more detailed message coming from in house.
Instead we are left with minimalist info releases which leads to parsing every word said & rampant speculation.
Almost if not all companies are guilty of this… but it’s an artform to Anet.

anatheod BobDobalina Siphaed He’s three for three, IMO. All of his elite specs have been really interesting and thematic without necessarily doubling down on raw power. (Yeah, not even Chronomancer. It generates a ton of extra efficiency, but there’s only one *damage* trait in the whole spec.)

I worry about the efficacy of the gyros. I’ll have to watch the livestream to see what exact form they’ll take and if they’ll be useless in more difficult PvE. Please be more survivable than things like minions!

Grimmtooth Syppi Superbrak Not that it makes it “wrong”, but I was expecting more 8 months after announcement and a month before launch.

Superbrak ManastuUtakata Re “If it’s never a tank, no one can get upset… right?”  Huh?

1) this is the internet

2) More importantly, a business reality is that customer’s perception of the product affects sales far more than the product reality.

No need to worry.   We don’t enjoy the taste of Bookahs.

Mixed feelings personally.  On the one hand it does sound kinda cool.  On the other, I hardly rolled an Engineer, a class that uses guns exclusively, so that I could then use a hammer.

anatheod Yeah, this was clearly a PvP/WvW specialization. I hope it shakes things up a lot over there! :)

ManastuUtakata From what I read on the blog post, neither.
Anet’s press release may drop the T-bomb but the blog post doesn’t mention it at all… while also highlighting no skills that could be construed as “tank-like” the base Engineer didn’t already have access to, save for much easier access to stability. Anet sure aren’t selling “tank” with anything revealed about the Scrapper so far.
If it’s never a tank, no one can get upset… right?

A bunker style is something i wanted for my engi for a long time. And no i dont mean the braindead turret engi that used to dominate leaderboards. However this falls somewhere between brawler/bunker style. The support seems limited but the beefiness and decent damage seem to be there. Also the remote gyro mechanic is game-changing. As someone who spents most of his gametime in spvp enviroments, this thing will be gamechanging. Being able to stomp people and CCing their teamates at the same time is very important in gw’s pvp and it will give the current meta bunkers a run for their money.
Also they finally adressed the stability issues of the engi, which really held him back as a bunker. Couple it with the superspeed and lightning field and you get a highly mobile bunker, capable of caping points and holding them for a really long time.

tobascodagama BobDobalina Siphaed and according to the changes Gee will be implementing in the next BWE, he will come out even stronger. Dude did a stellar work with the necro.

Syco_at_Twitch Asura are like some acid induced idea of breeding a Piranha with a Gnome. A disturbing critter to see in the wild! (shudder) I’d wear full plate all the time if I had to be around them often. I’d be afraid I’d wake up and find one gnawing on my arm or leg!

Syppi Grimmtooth Superbrak Yar, here’s the exact line from the press release:
“Scrappers give engineers the ability to wield a hammer as a new weapon, dealing more direct damage with tank-like, close combat abilities.”

It’s gonna be really interesting to see how ranged stomps via the Function Gyro play out in PvP.

Siphaed The Reaper is awesome. I played it during the last beta and that specification is a ton of fun. I even just leveled a necro to play Reaper during HoT, though I will be starting HoT with my engie and Scrapper. Sounds like a fun class too.

Looks like a lot of fun. Engi was my first Level 80, and my first Main. I’m really curious about the remote rez and remote finisher options: that will be pretty huge in PvP and WvW.

Grimmtooth Dragonhunter is an oddly specific name.  Like, nope you can’t hunt those, they aren’t dragons
