Guild Wars 2’s Desert Borderlands will dramatically improve WvW

42

If you’re excited about Guild Wars 2’s upcoming Desert Borderlands map that will be replacing the three old WvW borderlands maps currently in the game, then scoot your butt over to a lengthy dev post on the region’s highlights and design.

While the number and location of objectives will be similar to existing borderlands, the new map will feature increased verticality, distinctly thematic structures, a more strategic layout, new elemental shrines, and a central oasis that triggers an occasional zone-wide event.

Check out a video overview of Heart of Thorns’ Desert Borderlands after the jump!

Nucleon Planetside did it pretty well. But the capture mechanics were quite different from it’s current iteration, even that Lattice was different. Not to mention the bonuses from locking continents were a better.

drypulse I don’t think that a smaller map would help wvw in anyway. They could improve our traveling features and not just 1 or 2 waypoints.

Just like they “Dramatically”fixed the WvW achievements.

The mechanics of massive PvP are just soooo hard to get right. Sometimes I wonder if it’s even possible. Right now the meta is simply zerg from keep to keep, never defend, because there’s no benefit to it. This means that there is a very marginal amount of PvP actually. In addition, it boils down to a pure numbers game rather than any skill or strategy. This isn’t just in GW2, it’s in nearly every massive PvP game from GW2 to PS2 to Eve, none of which in my eyes have found a way to make large scale PvP really compelling.

So how do you fix it? If playing D is rewarded more than playing offense everyone plays D and you still get no PvP as everyone plays D. If playing D and playing O are rewarded equally you get the merry-go-round. So some will argue to make it so that you can’t re-cap a point if it’s been capped in the last hour. Well if you do that then the merry-go-keep still spins because unless the loop takes less time then an hour there’s always a keep for both sides to take unopposed. Ok, so then make the timer really long, say 2 or 3 hours. Now, what happens if all points are taken? Stalemate? Ok to avoid stalemate, lets say that if the whole map is locked a random keep while unlock thus causing both sides to converge on it. When that happens it’s the epitome of blob wars since the entirety of both armies would converge.

This is the real problem with massive PvP and honestly I’m not sure if there’s a way to make it fun. If you look at all other competitive and compelling endeavors from Football to LoL they have certain rules in common: they end and someone wins, both teams have equal players, the number of players is limited to an amount which balances fun.

Is this fixable or is this fundamentally flawed?

sure hope they shrink it down. i’d have so much more fun in wvw if it wasn’t for spending 99% of my time just running…

This looks interesting and actually exciting.  I just hope that this is not like a movie trailer where we see all of the new and exciting stuff in the trailer and there is nothing new left in the actually game.

Damonvile Siphaed varaaxis It’s a satire of an old poster from the months leading up to and right after the original GW2 launch. Someone who was even more nonsensical than SoMuchMass.

varaaxis As A PhD in Psychology you go awfully fast for the ad hominem to discredit anyone playing. since you have confirmed sources that suggest that June 15th is the last day of GW2, could you please show those sources? Otherwise you’re just making claims with your appeal to Authority (anyone can claim to PhDs on the interwebs; I have a PhD in bullshit detection, for instance).

Also, my own Source says something different. http://www.kdbdw.com/bbs/download/192028.pdf?attachmentId=192028

I get it. You don’t like the game. Even if NCsoft is taken over, the new owners are unlikely to kill off a top earner. That’ll be more likely Wildstar’s fate, if it happens.

Chaz_Lawler it definitely is, all the wvw dailies except for dolyak/camp related stuff can be done in eotm. But what I’m getting from the info provided so far is that you can actually still go kill sentries/dollys etc. It’s just that things like keeps are now harder to attack if you haven;t taken any of the towers, because you have to run the long way around. Based on some of the videos, it also looks like you could actually destroy one of the walls of a tower without taking it and then use that as a shortcut.
