Excessive duping leads to Ark: Survival Evolved wipe

Hundreds of dinosaurs were horrified to learn this week that human invaders in Ark: Survival Evolved weren’t merely eking out an existence on their island but were absolutely dominating it with piles of ill-gotten weapons.

Reports have been coming in concerning a major duping exploit in the early access title. By taking advantage of this loophole, players had been mass producing goods and throwing the balance of the title out of whack.

As a result, Wildcard elected to do a complete wipe on the game’s PvP servers yesterday. “You have our word that we’re going to do everything we can to make sure that something like this doesn’t happen again,” the studio posted. “It’s extremely painful for us to see you guys being frustrated and upset, we hate this, and it’s not something we want to repeat again, as we’re sure none of you guys do either.”

Massively OP’s own Jef Reahard scoped out the game last week, calling it “enjoyable” and “absolutely worth the 25 bucks it’ll cost you during the Steam summer sale.”

Morreion Robert80  Yeah, given how hacking is such a big deal with these things, that sounds like trouble waiting to happen.  No, it is merely a matter of those who are not jerks should make sure we note the attitude of others.  I think a problem with this is the current method of gaming does not make reputation matter, and I think that an account name works to help with that just a little (but only if social matters.)
This is where all that convenient random group stuff actually hurts… and I think as the genre reconsiders the current themepark build of most mmos for something a little different, this is something that can be addressed to some extent.
The problem is that there really isn’t a method of dealing with this online… without bringing reputation back into the matter.  At least, not one without bigger issues, just like what you have mentioned.

In South Korea, you need the equivalent of your Social Security number to do things online.  I wonder how much cheating and exploiting they have there?
This may indeed be an example of the cure being worse than the disease, however.  Would like to hear from South Korean players on this.

Tamanous If you wish to go THAT route.

“I am not a video gamer. I played consoles when younger but my life was sports and for hobbies strategy board games and later mmorpgs. I am a sportsman. Youth brought up on video games are the furthest thing from sports(people). It is a me me me culture.”

I’m sorry, but in my experience, ‘athletes’ or ‘sportsmen’ as you refer to them, are a very ‘Me Me Me’ culture, to the point of degrading, or even physically attacking other athletes or teams. I’ve seen more gamers go out of their way to help another person (especially ON their game) than I have an athlete go out of his way to help that gamer in the hallway pick up his books. Just saying. Pot meet Kettle. Everyone has their ego.

karmamule Robert80 Eliasar_ shadowblender Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Borderlands The Pre Sequel. Just because it doesn’t affect other players negatively doesn’t mean it’s not a dupe. Dungeon Defenders, Diablo (all of them). Pretty much any game where items are a thing and you can do things with an inventory of ANY TYPE has exploits and dupes. I don’t see the fun in it. I guess on PvP servers people do it to “Be the very best, like no one ever was.” But they’re still scumbags… Everyone knows you cheat.

cald melissamcdon I’d say it’s in a far better state (both in terms of bug and the sheer depth in gameplay) than many other games in “Early Access” stages.

melissamcdon its an awesome game.. find a good server and a group of peopel to play with and you will ahve a lot of fun. There are bugs as its early access and some performance issues but its still a great game.

Well it is early access so I expect to see more wipes on the official servers in the future.

blackcat7k No, thanks. I paid for the game. I’m going to play it the way I see fit. If they want me to beta test, they can pay me a salary.

That’s why I come to MassivelyOP.com…. to hear half-baked screeds on politics and economics.

Why do we have cheaters?   The other guy’s candidate made everyone a bad person!

You do make a point, but I suspect that having masses of people playing your latest game build daily (and some of those filing bug reports) also serves as some useful testing.

My opinion, anyway,

Be well,
