Pathfinder Online deploys holding and outpost warfare system

8

Purposeful PvP is expanding in Pathfinder Online, as today Goblinworks is rolling out its holding and outpost warfare system for its early enrollment v10.1 patch.

With the new system, players will be able to attack enemies’ hexes with the ultimate intent of taking over their territory and reflexes. In order of that to happen, a feud must be initiated, outposts in a hex must be overrun, and that hex’s holding must be conquered. If all goes well, players can settle into their conquest and eventually start enjoying the resources generated by that hex.

There are a few other improvements and changes with v10.1, so check out the patch notes to make sure you’re up to speed.

Barrages I play and really enjoy the game–I’m one of the leaders of Ozem’s Vigil, a settlement of Lawful Good Paladins, Clerics, and Monks.  Which highlights some of the current issues:
-Paladins and clerics aren’t in yet.  Basically the game is very “minimum” right now in a lot of aspects,  for example only four classes are in (Fighter, Cleric, Wizard, and Rogue).  Along the same lines, graphics has not been a focus, and is one of the weakest parts of the game.
However, that being said, there are some very cool parts to the game:
-Crafting system is really good, and for once it’s meaningful.  You DON’T get good gear by killing boos mobs.  You DO get good gear by crafting it, from raw materials gathered throughout the world, using recipes that are monster/boss mob drops.  So PvE, gathering, and crafting all work in a meaningful system.
-Character development is extremely deep, free and open.  I’ve wound up with a wisdom focused cleric/fighter that can solo ok if I need to (that’s dangerous), and can either be a strong party healer or an ok healer/front-line fighter depending on the party’s need.
-The combat system is really deep and complex.  There’s no button-mashing or rotation, and you have to learn how different kinds of attacks create conditions that can then be exploited.  So for example a wizard CANNOT crowd control on their own, but if there is a bowfighter or rogue in the group they can use synergistic attacks to slow/stun, etc.  I think that’s cool.

But this raises another issue: holy crap is the game complicated and hard to pick up if you’re a newbie.  It’s so complex that I think a lot of people try it and are so confused in the first couple days they quite.  Plus all the fun is in being a member of a settlement, and working to build your settlement up in relation to other settlements–it is zero fun as a solo game.

Barrages I checked out the free trial. While I like the direction they’ve gone with character abilities and their implementation of Feats and such, the game just isn’t far enough along in development for me to want to spend any time on it.

Barrages Yea there are people playing. Probably at least a hundred or so nightly, few hundred throughout the week. There is a bit of a lull right now cause a lot of the more common people and good chunks of various settlement leadership are at GenCon. It is an Early Release ongoing development game so bunch of stuff is rough, but it’s serviceable. The key really is joining one of the communities in game and working with folks.

One of the worst games I have played.  I cannot believe that they charge a sub and apparently also have a cash shop for something so bad.

Giggilybits Barrages For me, its just that I cant see myself playing a pvp sandbox anyhow. The fact its trying to trade in off the name of a famous cooperative roleplaying game doesnt help.

Barrages  There is not sure if people are breaking down the door to get in but theres a free trial. Ive played it and it has a lot of “potential” when I say “potential” its like a lot of things aren’t implemented yet (like no footsteps) so id say its alpha_ ish stage. This is one of the games im looking forward to but paying to play one of these early access games just isn’t for me.

Is anybody playing this game? I’ve been curious about it for a while but I’m pretty wary from too many junk pre-release excursions.
