RIFT community manager: ‘RIFT is in zero danger’

The boogie, for instance.

The health of a game is always important to the players; no one wants to make a home that’s going to be shut down in a few weeks. Players on the RIFT forums were asking about precisely that, and community manager Ocho responded with a rather lengthy post on the state of the game from the development side. While he stopped shy of giving an actual number for the development team, he did state that it is the largest he has ever worked with and that the game is in absolutely zero danger of shutting down or fading away.

Meanwhile, fans with less fear for the future are keeping their eyes on Gamescom with speculation that the aforementioned developers will finally discuss the game’s fifth calling. Rumors have swirled for some time based upon test server builds that the new calling will be Primalist, but the most recent speculation is that something definitive will be said during the convention.

blackcat7k annoyedbadger I’m not talking psychic divination, all subscribers were notified of the changes well in advance.

No, the “rest of us” didn’t know for ages. Those that are still with them may pretend that they saw the writing on the wall, but many of us that saw the way Trion handled the business model switch as fundamental change in how they treated their customers. I wouldn’t worry about how “butthutt” someone is, you should probably be worrying about when they hit you with another Trick or Trap.

“16 months…..have you any idea how much you can get done in that time? ”
========
From inception (“Hey, what if we went F2P?”) to conversion (“Announces F2P starting today!”).. tell me how much time that is?
http://www.pcgamer.com/swtor-game-director-its-not-super-easy-to-convert-from-subscription-to-free-to-play/

“When I asked Ohlen about the free-to-play model and how he felt about it personally, he told me, “I think it can work for different games. It really depends on how you go with your game. Games that have been built to be free-to-play from the start definitely work out. Now, there have been games that weren’t free to play from the start and transferred over to becoming free to play that have worked as well. But it’s definitely not something that’s super easy to do.”

blackcat7k annoyedbadger you need to join realitry with the rest of us, we knew for ages before it went live that it was going f2p, and they gave patron status for ages for people who were subbed, so they got exactly the thing they paid for experience wise….

you need to get a does of reality, you seam unduly butthurt for what was an event handled very well by Trion.

They did not give “fair warning”. That’s the point. When you act like your business is holding to certain payment model. When you sell your product as if you’re remaining under the payment model  while you have no intention of doing so you are lying to your customers.
The CRs were constantly reassuring people that the game was not going F2P even though after the fact it was known that they were working on F2P model while getting the CR to feed people garbage.

hardy83 If Defiance is in danger, it’s because Trion and the Defiance devs pushed it into harm’s way. The player base is still there and very dedicated, but Trion just refuses to update it in any meaningful way, or even explain why they won’t. They’ve implied in the past that they have some sort of agreement going that they wouldn’t show favoritism to any one platform (PC, Xbox 360, PS3), so now that they’re running up against the consoles’ limitations, no one gets updates other than balancing.

They basically have to spin their wheels and make the game more profitable, which is driving players batty. Their newest update will add another weapon tier that seems to be only attainable by gambling with arkforge. For a 100% chance at a rarity increase on PTS, it’s 8000 arkforge, which is pretty much either a year of grinding or $200+ in the cash shop. I love RIFT and Trove, and I still play Defiance, but it’s like they’re actively trying to chase people out of Defiance for reasons I can’t grasp.

Yes. whats the point you are making? thats what you do in business. You announce things when you have them ready to announce.
I really am constantly surprised just how silly people are on the internet. They are a business, they announce things when they are ready to announce them. They gave plenty of warning, and put a very fair model out there. Seriously, grow up.

Just because you ask a question on teh forum, does not entitle you to answers. If that were the case, the SC forums would be a full time job of CR explaining a few things about all that money…..

not that long I would have thought. The shop was already there, they just had to implement the patron system, and thats not that hard. THe main thing would be sorting out prices and suchlike, and they made a very fair model, you know, them not being asshats like the people who made SWTOR’s original F2P offering were.

16 months…..have you any idea how much you can get done in that time?
And why do you interpret “no plans for F2P” as “never considered it for a second”….people make contingencies, they may never have planned F2P, but I’d bet almost every game nowadays has a F2P model sitting in a file somewhere in a “just in case” scenario. You’d be stupid not to. In my line of work we plan for everything, things we never intend to do, things that we damm well hope never happen, but we still plan. Some plans are fairly bare bone outlines, but we plan just in case.

No, sorry. When there was no indication on the very same forums that people were constantly asking confirmation about if they were switching then they were intentionally not telling people about the change. They kept people in the dark right up to the point they were ready to role it out.
The way they handled Archeage is much in the same fashion. Lie, stall, and then drop the bomb on the player base after they’ve made their money.

Ceder Likely a small portion. RIFT and Defiance both launched with their own launchers, were active for some time, and transitioned to Glyph before their Steam launches, I believe. So I’m thinking most of their player base stick to Glyph. Trove is the (crazy) anomaly, but that was in open beta on Glyph for a while, as well.
