Champions Online turns 6 with belated fanfare [Updated]

what

There’s nothing quite as depressing as having a birthday party when no one shows up, but at least in that situation there would have been a party. Champions Online turned six years old on September 1st, and the team celebrated by… responding in a thread created by one of the game’s players. The post hints that there will be content coming for the game this month and an “anniversary surprise” sometime this week, though it’s now several days late.

Update: The event is finally live as of this afternoon! Massively OP reader ItsBrou has posted several screenshots of the giant cake that has invaded the game down in the comments.

dorn2 I say they exist to pressure game devs to stop being slobs.
And you’d be wrong. That can certainly be part of their role at times, but they do not exist in any way, shape, or form to do so. You’re talking about a consumer advocacy group, which is not media.
Just like the purpose of real journalists is to report on dirty politicians.

This is…what reality do you exist in? Some journalists who cover politics do, at times, report on dirty politicians. But the overwhelming majority of journalists A) Do not cover politics proper and B) Those that do cover more than just impropriety amongst politicians.
If you think otherwise then you’re wrong.
You’re just cute as a button.

I don’t really care what you think they exist to provide.  I say they exist to pressure game devs to stop being slobs.  Just like the purpose of real journalists is to report on dirty politicians.
If you think otherwise then you’re wrong.

dorn2 It’s one thing to have a trusting relationship where you can remain critical. It’s another to be an asshole to the developer to the point where they will not communicate with you at all.
They exist to pressure the devs to stop being such slobs.

No, they exist to provide news, opinions, and critiques of games and the gaming industry. They are not a lobby group for consumers.
I am not a journalist

That much is painfully clear. It’s also painfully clear that you know no journalists or anyone who works with journalists.
It’s pretty clear that it’s not a harmonious relationship though.

It’s not! Developers want media to pimp their games and give them perfect scores. Media don’t want to do that. Media want developers to give them full information and access to their games and staff (usually) so they can write all kinds of interesting articles. Developers don’t want to do that.
The relationship is already adversarial, by nature. But that doesn’t mean that the two sides have to hate each other or that they can’t come to a basic understanding and level of trust, knowing full well that neither side will do what the other wants and that they still have to work together.

That’s insane. They should absolutely not have a trusting relationship with the developer.  They’re the gaming press.  Developers should be a hostile existence to them. They exist to pressure the devs to stop being such slobs.

I am not a journalist so I don’t know how real journalists get interviews of course.  It’s pretty clear that it’s not a harmonious relationship though.

Peregrine_Falcon Doctor Evilface GoJammit You aren’t stating facts either. Maintenance mode has a specific meaning, not whatever meaning you feel like attributing to it.

Stuff is actually being worked on by devs assigned to CO. The opposite of what maintenance mode is.

“Chugging along” sound more like being stable and that the game is continuing to run just fine. It’s not doing amazing, but it’s not doing terrible either.

Doctor Evilface GoJammit – “You’re entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts.”
PWE all but admitted several months ago what people have known for years. CO is in maintenance mode. Their having forgot their own anniversary proves it.

Cryptic layoffs alone totaled 18 people

Yes, you’re entitled to your own opinion. You are NOT entitled to your own facts. CO is in maintenance mode. That is a known fact.

Madda You know it was the same studio that built both of those games, right?

“Studios *often* try to wait us out or stall us or
dodge questions by simply staying quiet, and they get away with it
because they think we won’t talk about”
Time to start adding “we reached out to XXX for comment, but did not receive a reply within 24 hours”?  …  like many professional sites do, even those its kinds of pointless (Large companies having so many moving parts needed to make an official responce)

Good Grief? This is the internet, you know to expect your comments to be used against you by now, especially in the MMO community. Both of us know this isn’t your first week in MMO news.

Good Grief x2 “MMO forgets its own anniversary” post, picture of a ruined city, or rubble (?), knowing this is a non-news story (your own words). Time for an editorial pass too your articles, especially for those extra stirring up shit articles. (Jeez just look at the CO fight threads .. I’m leaning to this being intentional, but you got your likes under your name and article clicks for starting the fight so you’ve “won” already)

And no, for the record .. I wouldn’t expect most companies to get back to you in 24 hours, thus my next question, I’m actually generally curious at this one, and you’ve kind of touched on MMO poor communication. Consider it an “Ask Massively: MMO Communication”
– How many MMO/online game do you cover (roughly)
– How many *official* (semi-insider not info@game.com) news contact channels to the Publishers/Developers/Game-Insider does MO have
– How many actually can get back to you in 24 hours (MMO-Co’s have a reputation for terrible communication skills for good reason)
– How many get back to you in 24 hours when it is “bad news”
