Marvel Heroes studio Gazillion hit with layoffs [Confirmed]

Put these in a room.

It’s sad news for fans of Marvel Heroes and Super Hero Squad Online as at least one of the teams behind Gazillion‘s successful titles appears to have gotten a bit smaller. Michael Parks, formerly of the company, tweeted that friends of his were out of work:

https://twitter.com/Cuthpaste/status/639149342905905152

He declined to give more numbers and insisted that whatever happened was not a news story or unusual for the game industry. More information and speculation was posted on the official Marvel Heroes Reddit (which the moderators appear to have removed) and on its forums. We’ve reached out to Gazillion for comment on which game was affected and will update this story with any response; regardless, our condolences go out to everyone involved.

Update 09/03/2015 3:59:00 p.m.: A Gazillion representative has issued the following statement to Massively OP confirming layoffs.

Yesterday, as a result of company restructuring, we at Gazillion unfortunately parted ways with some truly excellent personnel. We wish them well in their future endeavors, and would recommend them to other employers in a heartbeat. To our players – the best community in gaming – rest assured that Gazillion remains very healthy, and we’re as dedicated as ever to continuing to deliver the stellar new content you’ve come to expect from us.

robinsswope I agree.  I had fun at first, but it wore thin and I was done.  Plus, I dislike how this game prevents an Ultimate Alliance 3 from being made.  The Ultimate Alliance series was so much better.  The gameplay, the powers, even the voice acting and art, imho.

Well at least, for the time they were made in, the art was great.

Armsbend Skyewauker Sure is.  Why do you put your foot in your mouth all the time.
“I don’t think a ton of people are playing it is the problem”.
“I PLAYED for quite a bit…” , past tense.  You don’t know any thing at all about the current state of the game.  Thats a problem, especially when its right foot inserted first, followed by the left.
Its F2P.  Go log in for me and you will see you were incorrect about your statement.

Porculasalvania This sort of thing is normal for games.  It doesn’t mean MH is doing bad, or well.  The games industry does this all the time.

It isn’t greed, btw, or I should put, it is greed, but the inherent greed which makes capitalism work.  In other words, the parent here is acting normally.

SirUrza phoenix0401 Sounds like it’s Doomsaw. Significantly more than a graphic artist.

The frustrating thing for me lately was that some perks and rewards in-game were totally random. The Pirate Deadpool Team up especially was horrid and frustrating. some people received the free team up after only and hour or two of play and others played for days without being able to complete just the first stage. Then there was the “Win 5 $5,000 tickets” debacle where they teased that you could find one of 5 $5,000 tickets that would randomly drop during game play. Only 1 was ever found and that was a month after the event by a woman and her husband who rotated playing the game for 24 hours straight for a week. This and the constant glitches that stuttered game performance, caused player items that were bought to become missing or misplaced elsewhere in the game made it a frustrating play at times.  And then there is the forums where the administrators will warn and ban you if you say anything negative about the game; or try to defend said statements. Wrap this all in with a monotonous game play and it is a fun game if you play it a little, but after a while you just gave up supporting it with purchases, because it felt you were just throwing money away for nothing.

They never really added anything for the more hardcore players…. thats depressing to me because being able to just die 10 times while fighting a boss and just keep running right back into the room and continuing the fight is just so lame. It takes out any type of edge of your seat action. Also the gear and crafting LONG AGO needed to be completely overhauled and they never did it still. Just those 2 things would have made this game a winner, sorry guys better luck next time.

Bitrip SirUrza phoenix0401 Yes yes, and no one is happy about Kamala. Or about Carol being renamed Captain Marvel. Or that maskless Captain Marvel was a fortune card.

You can make everyone happy.

It’s weird reading all of the negative comments in this thread.  Marvel Heroes seems to have been doing so well not too long ago, and there seems to have been a lot of excitement.

I was initially thinking the layoffs were about greed – that the parent company was happy with where the game was, and demonstrating their genuis foresight, don’t plan to build it out anymore for some time and thus started to lay off resources.

SirUrza phoenix0401 Amazing Aluminum Man Frankly, you are not thinking about this like a businessman. Forget what has been made. (Assuming they don’t force Female Thor and FalCap as the default costumes for those two.) They are being forced to make at least 2 of their characters for next year (Kamala and Miles) as “All New” characters. There are real costs associated with making those. There is also an opportunity cost: the same resources could be used to make Beast (who Gaz wants but Marvel doesn’t because Mutants suck now) or Jubilee (tie in with the new X-Men movie or fans of the old TV show, which is probably a much greater number of players than people that actually read the new comics).

Now, they are already in financials duress. If they are forced to take on costs, both real costs and opportunity costs, and the returns (i.e. sales of the Miles character) are down — even something small like 10-20% — it can have a major negative impact on the company and start a death spiral.

That’s completely ignoring that they probably won’t be able to make an Apocalypse raid to tie in with the X-Men movie next year because (a) Marvel hates Fox and (b) it isn’t All-New, All-Different.

This  is, financially, a real problem for Gazillion.

All the characters and names you mention already in the game as the people you say. Gaz is adding to the game, not taking away.

Take Spidey as an example… you can be Peter Parker, Spider-Man. Maybe you liked Ben Reily? Well, his version of Spider-Man (and Scarlet Spider) are skins in the game too. Maybe you liked Doc Ock as Spidey, well you can be the Superior Spider-Man. Or maybe you like Mayday Parker, she’s there too. Gwen and Miles are getting the same treatment and it’s not taking away from other characters because they’re just different cosmetic skins for Spider-Man.
