The Sylvari of Guild Wars 2 were created by the elder dragon Mordremoth to serve him. That was a foreshadowed but still unpleasant development at the end of the second season of the game’s living story. But as players venture into Heart of Thorns they’ll learn that this was not the whole story; the Sylvari as players know and play them are only the early form of their true purpose as part of the Mordrem Guard.
Larger than other Sylvari with a hard bark-like covering, the Mordrem Guard are those Sylvari who have gone over entirely to the dragon’s service. While it’s not clear who among the known lore figures will be among the turned, it is a known fact that the Sylvari are not immune to Mordremoth’s call after resisting it once, and fighting the Mordrem Guard is staring at the face of inevitability.
