Betawatch: Closed beta explosion (October 30, 2015)

Beta-watch the overwatch.

It’s a week of games entering closed beta. That is the joke here, if you want to call it a joke. Front and center, of course, is the long-awaited Overwatch beta, which you can join by… well, hoping. If you aren’t in it at this point, you’ll just kind of have to wait and hope that you get added in a subsequent wave. But there’s even more stuff going on in beta-land this week than that.

And what about all of those other games that we talk about every week? Well, they’re still in the list below here, as always. Check them out, and let us know if something has changed without us noticing. It happens from time to time.

As always, we consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s usually under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed; we also do not list expansions.

Albion Online: Closed beta starts November 23rd
Ascent: The Space Game: Steam early access

SallyBowls1 I watched the Rutles a few weeks ago.  My favorite song is Goose-Steppin’ Momma.  and the head bobs they use.  funny stuff!

SallyBowls1 Man, I haven’t seen The Rutles in forever; I need to rectify that.

That states of testing are something we debate a lot here, but unfortunately, whatever we call the phases doesn’t impact what the studios call test phases. I don’t tend to agree with the idea of bringing in outside players for something you’re calling an alpha, but that’s where we are.

TheFlameCrow It’s a neat, little game but they need to implement mouse-support.

The world has changed from ancient times when alpha and beta were about testing and feedback. I think you may need three states: closed, Rutles, and open. (Rutles is an homage to their song “All you need is cash” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rutles)

An alpha or closed beta for a limited number of special people is one thing.  When it includes anyone with $49, that is something else.
