Crowfall shows off the Ranger archetype

At the risk of sounding passive, I think she gets to determine... oh, you meant SHE'S entering. Never mind.

The next major round of Crowfall testing isn’t going to just feature another gameplay mode. It is going to feature that, yes, but it’s also going to feature a new archetype, the Ranger. While it’s not the first ranged archetype on display in the game, it should provide all-new gameplay experiences thanks to its mechanics, with a focus on hiding, setting traps, and swapping into melee combat once its targets get too close for ranged weapons to be effective.

Yes, we know, an arrow to the face still hurts if the arrow was launched from three feet away. You get the idea.

Of course, the choice to switch into melee isn’t just down to whenever you feel like touching your opponents directly; the Ranger, as one would expect from a bow-wielding archetype, uses ammunition. When that ammunition is gone… well, let’s just establish that there’s good reason to draw the knives and get to work. Crafters will eventually be addressing the need for ammunition, but the Ranger will subsist on loot drops with the first round of Ranger-enabled testing. Which is fine, since it’ll be enough for players to see what it’s like to rain arrow-based death on enemies just the same.

EpicViking Here’s one gameplay video of Pre-Alpha 1.1 test. It’s very early in development, there are still bugs to fix, combat to improve and lot of things to add. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnzpR7TM6Zc

MyNameIsIllegal There are different rules of PvP depending of the world you play in. In the Eternal Kingdoms, the owner of the world decides of the rules (he can even disable PvP completely). In the God’s Reach world band, it’s relatively safe for player who doesn’t like PvP since it’s a war between 3 factions, which means 1/3 of the player population is friendly. =)

KamaKuro I’m happy to see interdependency in mmorpgs make a valiant return. Let the anti-socials play FFXIV and other themeparks.

“Crafters will eventually be addressing the need for ammunition” there.. right there..

That’s what made SWG grand. And why WOW dumbed the MMO world down. In SWG you wanted to heal? A crafter needed to make the stim packs for you,etc.. You wanted to prioritize raw healing over length of hot? You had to find the right crafter using the right mats to make that specific playstyle.

Yes, it makes it tougher to balance and harder for people to enter, but it gives crafters a purpose other then ‘Work your ass off gathering for days to make a cool sword someone will pay you 20k for without even knowing your name.” or “Someone will give you a bunch of crap, you’ll hit a button, they’ll tip you 1k and the whole process is completely worthless”

I’d rather harvest and craft for days to make perfect ammunition people actually seek me out for.

mrnastybutler I think it’s fine in conjunction with the up-close-and-personal idea. Like you’ll be firing off a couple of arrows to start the fight before switching to blades.
