PWE on the release and monetization of Gigantic

Last week’s announcement that Perfect World Entertainment would sign on as a publisher for Gigantic was good news for fans of the MOBA, but it also leads to plenty of questions. What will change with the game’s new publisher, especially in terms of monetization? Staff for both Motiga and Perfect World Entertainment recently took to Reddit to answer questions about the transition, so you don’t need to wonder about it too much.

Monetization is something that still doesn’t seem to be finalized, but it isn’t meant to be predatory or overbearing, with player retention serving as a first goal for the game’s development.

Our focus as PWE is to help bring Gigantic to market and make it accessible to the players. To pull back to the curtain some more, our goal with Gigantic and the launch is very strongly focused on fun. Let’s partner with Motiga to continue the development of something that we as gamers in the company would be proud of and want to play. Monetization will make sense for the game. Our goal is to not have that be predatory to the core values of the game.

There’s also no need to worry if you’ve been enjoying the game on Xbox One instead, as the partnership with Microsoft remains intact. Players and fans can look forward to more open testing on the title planned for later in summer.

BoredNow Sorenthaz Hounddog74 woolydub The closest comparison imo is probably Tribes which their shooting mechanics were obviously based off of, as in Tribes most of the shots have weight and travel time.   I guess Overwatch does have that to some extent as well with certain heroes.

Damonvile TiaNadiezja Eh. There is always someone to come between a fool and their money. I’d rather it be the person who gives me free expansions.

Lights_andMusic Hounddog74 woolydub No, Paladins is a first person shooter.  The only MOBA elements are in the way heroes play and the fact that they have abilities and levels and can use cards with each level to upgrade their performance in various ways.
If there were a spectrum between MOBAs and Shooters, Overwatch would be easily the furthest towards Shooters/away from MOBAs and Paladins would be close behind Overwatch.   Meanwhile Paragon would be all the way on the MOBA end and Gigantic/Battleborn would be wherever they are in the spectrum.

woolydub They’re all pretty different.
Paragon is a third person MOBA.   Battleborn from what I understand is a first person shooter/action shooter that heavily leans towards the MOBA side.   Gigantic I have no idea about because I haven’t looked at it much.   Overwatch is not a MOBA whatsoever and is very much a first person shooter, the only MOBA element being that characters have abilities and ultimates that function similarly to MOBAs.

Except most of my dealings with PWE have been with Neverwinter, a Cryptic title. It doesn’t matter who makes the games. PWE publishes them and dictates the business model.

Hounddog74 woolydub Paladins is nothing like TF2. Its basically a third person shooter version of Smite.
