Ashes of Creation answers questions on progression, music, and (setting) forest fires

29

Remember kids, only devs can prevent virtual forest fires! And it’s probably a good thing that they do because apparently there are some Ashes of Creation fans who actually want the ability to light acres of in-game property ablaze for… reasons.

The bizarre query to program in firebugs came out of a wild-and-woolly community Q&A session that Intrepid CEO Steven Sharif did yesterday. Sharif fielded all sorts of questions about the game including practical (nodes, progression) and goofy (metal band music, a troll class for trolling).

The session is a little difficult to follow, what with all of the Discord pings and rambling questions from the community, but there are some interesting nuggets of info in it concerning the weather system, wider possibilities for caravans, and the depth of the crafting system. Check it out for yourself below!

I’m increasingly getting disillusioned the more details they reveal.
Sounds more and more like a Western mix of ArcheAge and Darkfall with a bit of Civilization thrown into the mix. I was hoping they had learned from the incredible steps forward BDO made in terms of economical depth, non-combat features and griefing/competition minimization. Where BDO went too far (everyone in an isolating layer like Bubble Boy) or not far enough (crafting and such very grindy and not attractive beyond a few month to a year, no skill involved) this rolls it all back. And makes it full scale competition in every regard. Not even your home is safe, even if instanced. Griefer can constantly force your town or village into a PvP situation (static PvP zone) merely by attacking it. Oh yeah and the court system we saw was abuse and a joke in ArcheAge? Let’s copy that.

Every MMO that is a bit more successful has realized that for long term (!) attraction and reasonable griefing prevention people need a place to root and PvP must be locally separated from their home spot. Ashes dives in as if none of those problems were found and people stay away from those games or drop out quickly – and thus Ashes makes your hearth the target of the main game dynamic and risk of loss.

Interesting but there still are some big questions. Housing is one the prime properties are going to be VERY valuable and other non instanced housing will probably be scarce, that may or may not be a problem but will create tons of aggravation between people (and that is probably their intention, now is it a good one?). The Destroy Major cities part of the game may either create a “Mongol Horde Simulator” type of game or a game where every server is dominated by some Megaguilds that owns everything important and where everyone else plays “Mid-eval Serf Simulator (with PvP)”.

Interesting listen.. some good tidbits of info.

Sounded like guild chat.. the kids were out in force.

I think it’s very generous that people from the Internet community have fully funded a detailed discussion about what should be in MMORPG’s.

In addition, being subscription based game cuts out a large percentage of accounts made to just sell gold. It increases the barrier to entry.

I hate that everything is going to videos. Is there not a cliff notes version anywhere with the relevant information? No sane person wants to sit through a 50 minute rambling video.

Ohh found it while typing: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4z7syr2dm0pxlhq/Discord%20Q&A%20With%20Steven%2005142017.docx?dl=0

Thanks for the link too bad it didn’t cover what I want to know.

I have my excitement for this game on hold until I know how character levels work and relate to the world. Can I travel the world as a level one or do I have to be high level reasonably visit some nodes. Can a group of low levels characters conceivably beat a max level character or is it like wow where the high level character would be invincible.

If they don’t have an interesting new spin on character levels then I’m out.

In before somebody begins insisting that the only way a sandbox is truly free and realistic and immersiony is if you can set forests on fire.

i want realistic as in super heavy plate armor that covers my ankles, and action combat, but not as in freedom to act as i please wether pvp or setting forest fires, even with consequences!

Hey they usually take a stab at asking for consequences too! It’s just that they say consequences should be entirely the responsibility of the victims, that way they can pretend the system is “fair” and “exciting” while basically running roughshod over everyone else with no real repercussions at all. This one was just funny because they are LITERALLY begging to be allowed to burn it all down. No facade at all.

I’m just surprised nobody asked for fetapults. Maybe this crowd is too young to remember Dawn.

I remember Dawn. The game responsible for the term vaporware?

As for rewarding pvp, might I suggest every ten kills you get a button in the mail.

Fetapult? No idea, but if it doesn’t turn out to be a device for launching Greek cheese on ballistic trajectories, I’m going to be disappointed.

(Insert quick Google search here)

I am disappointed.

So, female characters can get pregnant? Yes. And they have to carry the baby to term? Um, yes. And can they miscarry? Yes! And can that miscarried fetus be picked up? Yes! And loaded into a catapult? Yes!

Dawn turned out to be a hoax, fwiw, but by the time of the great fetapult debacle, I’m not even sure who was trolling whom. :P

Nuuuu! That’s how awesome Dawn will be. It may be a hoax and it may not even have a publisher but it’s awesomeness will make it form just like a Boltzmann brain and grace us all with the most wondrous of MMO worlds where PVE and PVP living in harmony can laugh and hold hands with each other and sing songs around the funeral pyres of the unbelievers burning bodies!

It will be GLORIOUS!

A funny thing about realism, even the games we see as quite realistic are usually very unrealistic instead. For example when it comes to travel time (getting to the next town would take days or weeks in a medieval setting), the effects of wearing armor for long periods of time, the way game rules and elements are not taken into account in how the in-game scenario works, and even the lack of bathroom breaks for our characters.

Not to mention the justice system. In a realistic justice system a character that did enough unlawful deeds would be relentlessly hunted for weeks or months at a time, unable to deal with most of the NPCs while being hunted, and would be rendered unplayable for long stretches of time (months, years, perhaps even permanently) on capture.

yeah that’s why shouting realism like some people like to do is silly.

tehre’s some pretty realistic sims out there tho. but they aren’t really generally very gamey.

Dwarf Fortress is your realism games.

Look up Dwarf Fortress and dead cats video on Youtube to see the level of realism there.

Graphics, realism, close release date.

Pick two.

They actually have tilesets that make it look better. I cant play it like that at all but I am serious about the Dwarf Fortress Dead Cat thing.

iracing has been out for years now, looks pretty good, and realistic enough that pro drivers use it to practice.

dcs also looks good, has been out for years, and pretty realistic.

but my point being neither are really video gamey in the ways that typical gamers demand that typically talk about realism for or against things in video games. XD

not sure that dwarf fortress really hits that bill either.

No! I don’t come to play games for realism! I get enough of that forest fire crap irl, I don’t need it in my fantasy games! /sarcasm.
