The Stream Team: Celebrating Star Wars Galaxies’ birthday

Star Wars Galaxies was the game that sucked Massively OP’s MJ into MMORPsGs, so how could she not celebrate its birthday? The official game may be gone, but there’s still an emu to hang out in and immerse in the memories. Join us live at 3:00 p.m. for some music and maybe even some mayhem in…

What: Star Wars Galaxies Emu
Who: MJ Guthrie
When: 3:00 p.m. EDT on Monday, June 26th, 2017

The show is over now, but we’ve embedded it here just for you. Don’t forget to check out past streams and playlists posted to our videos collection!

I tried playing this with a friend in January, I didn’t like the boring repetitive quests, how you have to buy a new speed bike a couple of times per day and how you needed to beg for buffs at the cantina in order to be able to go quest.

The character advancement was cool, if it had the positive aspects of SWTOR too, like voice acting, cutscene and more engaging story, it would’ve been fantastic.

I wish there was a game as feature rich as this sandbox was (preNGE). I’ve found plenty of fun MMOs over the years, but none quite like SWG.

Thinking about the Stream this morning, one of the houses you toured was the Large Tatooine. Of all the Tatooine style houses, it’s the only one that seems cold and industrial. In the live game, I tried out each house type and tried to decorate them so they’d be cozy and homey. This style was a real challenge.
I think it might make a fun shop/display building for a Droid Engineer. Perhaps even a Bioengineer because of the rooms with high ceilings which would accommodate larger droids and pets.

I hop on there every year for a month or two. It’s really come a long way in content and stability from a few years ago. Development is slow, but it’s being done carefully to remain faithful to the last patch before the CU hit.

I hope someone can someday make an EMU anyone can just run off their PC solo and not have to deal with dev drama and connection issues as the SWG emu’s have. Running like WoW’s Jeuties Blizzlike Repack. That’s as close to a single player WoW without it being the buggy “Single Player” server they have out. I would love to just run around Tatooine right click killing innocent NPC’s yelling “I AM the Senate.”

I’ve been playing for about two years on the EMU and have seen no dev drama. Both my husband and I run the game fine on our computers. I’m not seeing more problems with connection type issues than the live game had :) There are quite a few emus out there, sorry if you’ve had trouble on the one (s) you’ve tried.

How cool! I didn’t see you were doing this today, or I could have said hi, depending on the Emu you’re on. If it’s Basilisk, my Tailor can bring you some outfits, or craft them on the spot so you don’t need to sway in your skivvies.

Oh those dirty greyish boxer short looking underwear? The Star Wars universe really has an issue with laundry detergent.

I think the pants she had are “Desert Crawlers”, I always think they look like a brown diaper. An odd thing to start an Entertainer out in.

This is first time i see a SWG video or a stream, i understand now why Bree talks about it in the podcast, there is nothing like it in today’s MMOs, why is that? i never played SWG and now i saw what an MMO could be i don’t think i want to play anything less than that, in the last few weeks i’m asking myself what is the point of playing this or that game when all i do is irrelevant next expansion?

Maybe i should give the new games a chance, but i’m not going to buy them before first official release, i mean Crowfall, CU and SoTA, and yet none of these games feel like SWG, maybe i’m wrong here.

You’re not wrong. Many games tried to pull it off but failed. LucadArts was stupid for pulling the license.

MJ was having an nearly illegal amount of fun in the stream. :P Automod needed a little spanking though. LOL

SWG was a great respite from the almost-exclusively high fantasy theme MMOs all had at the time. I really enjoyed laser guns after years of bows and arrows. The game is crude looking by today’s standards, but it got so many details right.

1) civilian craft that were in no danger and could travel safely
2) combat craft that had their choice of dangers and combats they could face
3) ability to travel together on a ship to other planets
4) orbit capability where you could just chill and not have to fly your ship
5) realtime shuttle landings and takeoffs from spaceports
6) landspeeders that were fun to drive as mounts
7) Real, not instanced housing
8) A variety of interesting blueprints for housing
9) Massive storage capability in housing
10) Crafting with self-published kiosks for automated sales
11) Huge cosmetic options, all player-made
12) Self-emoting avatars based on keywords in text – they seemed very alive
13) Iconic races from the Star Wars universe, and playable
14) You could be Uncle Owen and not meddle in the affairs of the Rebellion
15) Ability to be an Imperial and rise in their ranks
16) Skill points that could be allocated to any skills you wished.
17) Skill points that could be recycled and then spent on different skills
18) Jedi was difficult to unlock and achieve and was a true high status
19) NPCs battled each other and the Empire was intrusive and annoying
20) Battle Fatigue ensured forced social interaction in cantinas

I could go on and on…
