PSA: Guild Wars 2’s mounts may be causing motion sickness issues

Longtime readers will know that we take motion sickness from games pretty darn seriously around here, given that we have a writer who’s been severely affected by some of the VR demos we’ve sent him to. So don’t read any judgment into this PSA: Multiple Guild Wars 2 testers participating in the Path of Fire preview weekend are reporting that they’re experiencing motion sickness, sometimes severe, while dealing with the game’s brand-new mount system, specifically because of the camera.

ArenaNet has apologized and said that the mounts team recommends lowering visual blur in the short-term as “they feel it may help with this problem.” Another user prone to motion sickness suggested a whole range of settings that are making mounts (or at least the demo raptor mount) usable for him.

“We’d love to hear from you if this adjustment is effective,” ANet’s Gaile Gray wrote. “Team members who have worked/are working on the mounts will be tracking this feedback!”

I’ve been super bogged down and didn’t get to write back when the weekend was in full swing, but I definitely suffered this weekend and the mount animation did trigger my motion sickness, which I totally admit is easy to do in my case. :(

I use ginger for motion sickness for Eve Valkyrie that I get once in a while. This might help.

Consider me now a bit concerned. I didn’t try out the preview as I like to avoid doing that anymore. Since as I’ve mentioned numerous times here on MassivelyOp that since getting older I do now suffer from nausea from some of these motions, and that it makes most of those games unplayable for me. :/

Why I’m not playing SWL when I played the hell out of TSW. Or why I don’t play DDO or have a hard time with EDO. Why I won’t be playing Crowfall and why I don’t play FPS’s. (sigh) Getting old sucks, just saying. I can’t imagine repelling out of helicopters now or being on high elevations looking down anymore.

You should participate in the free limited weekend preview so that you can allay any concerns you would have with the mount. It’s the only way to be sure.

I’m soo torn on doing that because if it does cause motion sickness for me, we’re talking hours of feeling like crap and doing nothing but laying down and closing my eyes. If the one mount moves like WoW’s raptor mount then I’m hosed. I can’t use the raptor mounts or mechastriders for that matter in WoW at all due to the way it makes me feel.

As it is I’m a bit under the weather so I didn’t go for my long motorcycle ride I was supposed to go on today and I don’t want this to make me feel even worse. Damned if I do or don’t in this scenario. Btw love the Speedracer avatar picture. :)

Btw I just tried the demo. Sadly as I thought, the demo is going to make me have to go through the content before I can get to the part where the whole mount thing is. Which is something I don’t want to do.

I did the first part which took me to the small town and decided right there that I was done because I don’t want to play through the content. To me, mmorpgs are about the journey and not the destination so much though I’ve done my share of end content in mmorpgs, raiding etc.

Anyhow since I’m not sure how much of the new content I’d have to do before getting to the raptor style mount I logged out. Honestly it’s only $80.00 bucks so I’ll end up getting it regardless because I believe in supporting mmorpg developers that make the games I play. So if the raptor ends up being undoable for me like the WoW raptor and mechastrider I’ll be fine, I just won’t use that raptor.

Well, on that positive note, enjoy the journey.

you were almost to the point that you’d have been able to boot around on a raptor. after clearing the town of bad doods, you get to run around on one to save people with, and then are given a permanent one.

from what i can gather tho, the likely causes seem to be:
> the camera zooms out a bit when you mount, and in when you dismount.
> the raptor can’t strafe, and takes fairly wide turns
> there’s a bit of inertia in both the raptor’s and camera’s movement.
> your character bounces around a lot on top of the mount

the issue’s a very personal thing, so it’s hard to say if any of that will impact you until you try it out. (#1 can be mitigated by zooming out, and i assume skimmer’s won’t bounce so much, so the middle ones are going to be the main concern, imo)

Thanks for the reply. Figures I was close and didn’t know it. I was thinking that my luck would have been that the raptor would have been the second or third mount. So I’d have to experience a lot more of the content than I wanted to before the release of the expansion.

I’m reading the turning off motion blur and keeping zoomed out are two biggies for reducing the motion sickness. I’m hoping I’ll get lucky. heh.

I’ve had this from just a few different games over the years, and it’s always been because of resolution and/or perspective issues. It’s certainly a funny business, that’s for sure.

Ah well, at least that is one benefit to having a low end pc. I cannot even enable features like that.

That sucks that some people are having issues. I hope ANet is able to get it fixed so that everyone is happy. I hope those who were interested in PoF give ANet a chance to fix the issue rather than just writing it off. Remember it hasn’t been released yet. Hopefully it’s just a matter of adding a camera motion option in the options menu.

Heh, Playstation 1 and Nintendo 64 gave me motion sickness as well, imagine what would have happened to video-game development if people stopped playing video-games from a little vertigo.

Hatchet job is obviously a hatchet job.

The motion blur makes for superbly awesome screenshots.

Motion blur? Ugh. Games need to stop with that crap, it adds a huge performance hit and it never looks good.

Except it doesn’t. The tech has come along way in the past 10 years. It’s near perfect in this game. The only “performance” issue come across is mounts getting snagged on a 1in jump up a stair.

Enjoyed the Raptor mount immensely. The feel of the mount has meaty heft and weight, with animations giving it life and breath, much like a few console games. The racing event is a blast. And no ill effects of motion sickness. Sorry to hear others are having issues. But I’m definitely looking forward to the other mounts, like the Skimmer.

Although the sneak-peek preview weekend content is primarily restricted to the vast city of Amnoon and the Crystal Oasis, I suspect this beautiful city will become home for a few stalwarts, who shamelessly venture into the unknown of the Crystal Desert (and future content.) Plenty of nice touches to the city, making it come alive. And exploring the rooftops of the cityscape (with a Raptor mount even) and meeting shady characters in unlikely places really cinch the fun for me, among other things. I’m more than ready to see what the rest of the expansion has to offer.
