This week should serve as a helpful reminder that just because a game is in testing does not mean that it’s actually primed for launch. Two high-profile games this week have gone from early testing to a hiatus or cancellation. Breakaway is definitely on a hiatus that may well rhyme with “cancelled,” and The Amazing Eternals is paused and presumed dead. Whether this is an acknowledgement that the market is oversaturated with games of this type or just that those two titles were more than was needed is left as an exercise for the readers.
Other less cancel-y beta news also existed this week, though, so that’s good!
- As Prosperous Universe has rolled into early testing, the developers have looked back at the first set of alpha tests and what needs to be changed. There’s also an open question about whether or not chat should be transient (i.e., whether messages from the past should be displayed when you log in).
- Do you want to take part in early testing for Pantheon? You probably can’t afford to, as it’s going to run you $1,000. As the game is a deliberate throwback to older game design that required almost constant grouping, it’s probably a very good idea to keep it heavily gated.
- Crowfall’s next major test patch has been slightly delayed, which might bring to mind mutterings about “alpha three” somewhere in the comments. Deep breath. It’s all right.
- Last but not least, Magic: the Gathering Arena will start beta testing next month, if you feel like the various other digital card games that are spinoffs of the venerable card game spin way too far.
We also had a discussion about when a game crosses the line from “testing” to “launch.” That isn’t exactly beta news, but it’s relevant.
A list of titles in testing? Sure, we’ve got that down below. Did something jump test phases without us noticing? Has a cash shop opened in a game we don’t know about? Have we missed a game? Did Timmy fall in something other than a well (seriously, that kid never fell in a well)? Let us know in the comments!
As always, we consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s usually under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed; we also do not list expansions, with occasional exceptions.
