Shroud of the Avatar’s 55th release includes brewing and starter houses for everyone

Portalarium is shaking off its layoffs and plunging onward with the release of Shroud of the Avatar’s 55th update. Release 55 should be live just as this post goes out, and it’s set to include an elaborate brewing system, the UI overhaul, new minizones, and new enemies. But the best news of the update is the fact that SOTA now has a reasonable in-game way for every single player to pick up a starter house.

“All Avatars who complete the entire story will receive a Player-Owned Town Row Lot Deed (Taxed) from the Oracle! This means completing the Paths of Truth, Love, Courage, and the Path of the Oracle. This will be retroactive, so anyone who has already completed the story will merely need to revisit the Oracle to receive their lot deed.”

This is a huge deal given that one of the biggest pre-launch complaints about the game revolved around the difficulty and grind associated with house ownership. The studio says it’s being implemented “at the suggestion of the community.” Do note that it’s not a tradeable deed; it’s “meant to celebrate a significant achievement, and as such is a retroactive reward, given to all players who have successfully completed the three Avatar paths.”

Work on player vendors, localization, and castle defense has been postponed to the next update. Portalarium’s just put out a brand-new trailer for the game dubbed The Trail of Virtue; you can watch it down below.

Anyone that is at all interested in this game, give the free trial on the SotA website a try before you put any money at all into it.

I cannot stress this enough.

It certainly is a good move. Housing prices here, ooph, I don’t even like to think of them. Yes, I know you can build up a bunch of money and join in the lottery to try and win deeds and all, but as someone who usually likes to buy houses with cash the cash prices are horrific. Who ever knew it would be so soon after complaining about ESO’s $100 houses that we’d have a game that made those prices look absolutely reasonable and downright cheap by comparison.

Anyway this is a good move in the right direction.

The game hasn’t seen a lot of coverage since it actually launched and has numerous non standard systems that confuse the average moron so it doesn’t get as good of a reputation as it deserves.

Didn’t the housing in this game proceed ESO adding housing? Thus people were just ignoring the ludicrous housing prices in this game when the ridiculous housing pricing in ESO came out.

The game has finally imploded, playerbase is close to nonexistant (less than 100 in steam), even well known white knight whales are turning their backs on the game, and after a laying off over 50% of the staff (the ones that at least worked a bit) Port is done. We’r witnessing the beginning of the end, a race to the bottom

The time of reckoning is up for garriott, spears and long. Hopefully we’ll never see them in the industry again

I didn’t even know people played through Steam :D Most people who play this game don’t. I do know the population is higher than it was not very long ago, when I log on to play now I see a lot more people than I did when I first got it.

Although you’re just doom saying and don’t really seem to have your facts down well, if the game every really did implode I hope they would let us copy our online characters to our offline games at that point (I imagine they would). We can still play totally through offline even if it did go down – which isn’t optimal but at least we’d still be able to play through the story lines.

No one I play with, including myself, plays SOTA thru Steam. Not an accurate gauge.

Blatantly false, check Steamcharts..

On top of that misleading. Not mentioning the launcher at all, where the majority of players play.

There were people in Resolute all day. Thanks for trying at the trollen, but you’ll have to do better.

They also slashed Row taxes (which corresponds to the new deed) by half. So now if you get the daily “Basic Income” from the Oracle, you can pay the tax and bank 250g a day on top of it.

I’ve seen one of the new scenes while testing on the QA server, and it had some great surprises. Like great enough I had my friend go stand and watch while I triggered it. Spectacular to be honest.

There is a host of combat tweaks as well. Some nerfs, some pointless skills that are suddenly useful, and some ways to make it all noob friendly (in combat focus regeneration, low level healing increase, relaxation of fall damage.)

Overall another giant release, despite the reduction in staff. Great job Portalarium!

So far I’ve had a pretty good time brewing. I love that once you brew and cask it times stamps. That’s pretty legit. Definitely some nice changes this release. Interested to see the direction we’re headed.

Does this game let you have alts yet?

Reader

Yes, although they share a bank & Virtue with your main, and only one of the free deeds per account.

Since you can train in any direction, there are only a few reasons to actually have an alt. In most cases it would be better to just get a second account. Then you could get a second free deed if you desire, have both a good and bad character, etc.

If you weren’t in the early pledges, an alt will cost you $10 on the store. Or just get a second full account for $19 right now while they are on sale.

Now that may be interesting enough to pick the game back up. I was still waiting for them to finish basic development — not just saying they released while patching in and adding launch content constantly.

it’s really addicting once you get the hang of it. Nothing else out there like this.

I recommend joining the official discord to get help… it’s under “chat” on the official website.
