The Daily Grind: What MMO festival reward do you use year-round?

17

MMORPG holidays are funny events because while we kill ourselves to get thematic costumes, toys, mounts, and other goodies, the second the event is over… so is the holiday. And then we’re left with the question of whether or not we should still be rocking a Halloween garb in late November or pushing Christmas fashion into mid-March.

I am always on the lookout for holiday festival rewards that are fun and usable no matter what the time of year. LOTRO’s elk mount, which I got from the Christmas holiday event, is splendid no matter what month it is. And if World of Warcraft wouldn’t limit my access to costumes, I’d be a Thanksgiving pilgrim all summer long, baby.

What MMO festival rewards do you use year-round? Which are your favorites?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

In GW2, I use the Mad King’s backpack year round because it gives off light, making it ideal for darkened jumping puzzles.

It’s always Valentine Christmas in Warframe, as far as Ordis knows anyway.

I like the SWTOR life-day healing orb too, but the holiday thing I get the most use out of year-round is the 20-space Halloween bags in GW2 I think :)

I have a Christmas tree on the dashboard in Elite Dangerous, regardless of which ship I’m flying or time of year. I find it brings cheer to the dark reaches of the cosmos.

This hat. Yeah, it’s the ubiquitous witches hat from the BnS Halloween event 2 years ago. But, on my Force Master, it fits any occasion.

I use the Winter’s Helper pet in WoW pet battles. It is the little gnome in the green Santa suit. You cant summon the pet off season, but you can use it in battles. I named it Gnomosexual until some person reported my pet name. And then a GM went through all my pets and renamed a bunch :(
I also use the Rotten Helper and Snowman pet.

The Bree-land Yule-fest wallpaper from LotRO’s winter festival. It looks good year round. When the holidays actually arrive, I replace it with the Shire Yule-fest wallpaper, which has red ribbons and mistletoe trim.

I also leave out the Yule-fest Festive Candle table with the Wreath on the wall over it. To me they feel a bit like a druidic shrine to the seasons.

When my retired main isn’t riding her warhorse, I prefer her old, trusty Harvestmath Horse. It’s the oldest one I own, from back when you could only have one horse at a time. The character tended to dress in grey, and the horse’s coat matched.

And I carry around a huge stockpile of the Halloween “slapping hand” consumables. I use them on anyone who uses a “forced emote” effect on me. Rude.

I still pull out the Brewfest Kodo once in a while, but that’s about it.

In DDO I will get the candy apple and the caramel bite, the apple gives one hour boost to melee, ranged and spell power the other gives one hour physical and magical resistance. You can get the ingredients quickly and they can be used over and over with 2 hour cooldown.

FFXIV’s flying broom from Halloween.

Tera’s devilicious costume also from Halloween.
