Sci-fi MMORPG EVE Online is coming up on its 16th anniversary this summer, though this will be its first under its new owners at Pearl Abyss. And what better way to kick off a truly new year for the game that a brand-new trailer showcasing the free-to-play title’s features and the promise of the sandbox?

While veteran MMO gamers are more than familiar with the infamous EVE, they’ll be joining newcomers for a 400-second recap of everything the game has to offer, from glowingly gorgeous sci-fi visuals and massive guild battles to the newbie experience and ship porn. Maybe most folks could do with a little more shimmering nebulae than zoom-ins on skill training interfaces, but hey, EVE has it all, and that’s the point.

When you’re done watching this one – and you’ll want to just for the eyecandy, even if you’re done with EVE for good – hop over to Brendan’s EVE Evolved, where just a few weeks ago he ran down some of his favorite player-made trailers for the game.

That is the best and most honest video about EVE I ever seen since I started playing it(Feb 2012)

Eve Online is the blueprint for something that’s going to knock all our socks off one day. Hope I live to see its successor.

Microsoft Excel not included… ;)

I will give CCP props for finally doing a promotional video that talks about actual gameplay in EVE; and isn’t full of NPCs walking around in stations talking some fantasy political/military situation, and ended by a actual player talking about all the wars/military campaigns he’s been a part of. They’re finally talking about the actual gameplay and gameplay mechanics itself and how a person can play. – which is good.

The video is certainly a step up from it’s usual nonsensical cinematics but it’s still full of false information. Talking up the Free to Play aspects then mentioning the large amount of ships available or the various different activities you can do in game when majority of those aren’t viable for a F2P account is just beyond misleading.

There are tons of ships and abilities available for F2P users. And the fact that one talk comes after another doesnt mean they are related.

Not really. While certainly different faction ships are available, that largely inflates the number of ships available as the number of types of ships is mostly restricted to the basic categories. Industry, Mining, Exploration, and other game play elements are barely represented in the skills available often times shackled to the most basic versions that simply are a fraction of what’s enabled for combat. The F2P version of the game is basically an unlimited trial of the combat portion of the game. The title of the video literally has “Play Free!” in it let alone things like “A decade of free expansions” (most of which you can’t access the skills/ships of without paying the subscription but we’ll just not say that part).

Again, it’s a step up from it’s usual cinematic job that have absolutely nothing to do with the actual game but this video is just as misleading in different ways.
