The idea of having three-faction PvP in an MMO is that when one faction is dominating, the two remaining weaker factions can team up to take on the stronger target. Unfortunately, Gloria Victis was running into a problem wherein the two stronger nations would team up and kick the weaker faction, which made things more unbalanced. The latest patch is aimed at fixing that problem with the new Frontline Battles, which can only spawn between the strongest factions. Siege events are also more limited in who can attack and server condition is taken into account before these battles start.
Other improvements in the patch aside from bug fixes include rolling the Rite and River Outpost world events together as player-triggered events, updating the Volcano event, and disabling friendly fire from siege weapons to avoid people making fake alts to turn siege weapons against the defenders. The full list of changes is available now, so give it a readthrough and see if the open-world situation feels more organic after the change.
