Secondhand Lands is yet another weird and wonderful MMO you’ve never heard of

One of my favorite things about the MMORPG genre is that there are so many titles out there that there’s always something that even someone who writes about these games as a full-time job has never heard of, or at least has entirely forgotten. Case in point: Secondhand Lands. MMO blogger Bhagpuss recently pointed it out to us, as he himself stumbled across it just hiding out in plain sight on Steam. We’ve never covered here on New Massively, and on Old Massively, I found just three mentions of the game: a closed beta announcement, a (long-lost) stream entry, and a brief note in a game column about “freakshow” MMOs, all from at least eight or more years ago. I personally copyedited two of these articles and had absolutely no memory of the game!

Anyway, apparently, Secondhand Lands originally ran from 2009 to 2012 but sunsetted over a teensy player pop, but then it was brought back on Steam in 2017 as a free-to-play title.

Secondhand Lands is a massively multiplayer online game set in a fairytale world colored with parody and witty fun,” current studio and publisher Callipygian Games says. “The heroes are comprised of a motley crew of wolves, sheep, catgirls, and scrappers who have pledged their undying allegiance to either Little Bo Peep or Red Riding Hood.”

Bhagpuss’ visit to the game is just as bizarre as that description makes it sound; I admit I lost it when I got to the “Save Ten Cats” questline. Check out his impressions piece over on Inventory Full and grab the game on Steam – it’s free, after all.

I’ve seen these catgirls somewhere before from this game. Maybe it was just screenshots though. I would say I may have tried it once but if it wasn’t free when I was too young to remember if I played it or not, I certainly wouldn’t have paid for it, so I guess I didn’t. I’ve definitely seen the catgirls from this game somewhere I just can’t remember if it was somewhere else like some graphics pack or in screenshots sometime along when looking at games.

It isn’t great, and isn’t horrible. It’s definitely old and they’re trying. The lack of players certainly isn’t a positive, as that’s one of the few things that would make it fun would be if other people were actively playing. I did see three people come on and test it out very briefly and log out while I was playing it, but for the majority of the time, like the rest of the posters here wrote as well, I was the only one there.

For most of the characters you do your character customization *after* you create your character and log in using items they give you in your inventory. I’m sure that’s going to confuse some people. The “scrapper” has you select a type before logging on from quite a lot of types though they all have the same skills.

It’s old and was indie to begin with. It’s not that horrible but there are a lot of better choices out there. I mean it’s cute and all still, cute enough where it would be pretty fun if there were more people around. The bipedal choices can ride the four-legged racial choices as mounts to help their friends get around faster. It’s got different stuff like that to make playing together interesting but almost nobody is there playing it :/

Thanks for the link-love!

It’s an odd little game but fun with it. It could desperately do with the publicity, I imagine. As far as I could tell yesterday I was the only person playing.

It’s developed by a group called Callipygian Games.

So ya KNOW it’s got to be good. >.>

It looks quirky enough that I might try it.

Had to look it up. Added a new word to my vocabulary. A nice one at that.
