RSI plays with particle effects in this week’s Inside Star Citizen video digest

Special effects are pretty important in video games and especially in a sci-fi world of undeveloped technology. The folks at Star Citizen seem to have this on their mind with this week’s Inside Star Citizen report, which provided a closer look at an improvement to the SFX engine that will help the team render convincing particle tricks in-game.

The way the whole things works is pretty technical, as one would expect, but the new particle system will take more geometry into account when colliding into things for a more believable look to effects. The examples given in the demonstration allowed what I consider to be a ghost very convincingly peeing on a spaceship, as well as a pretty cool effect of a plasma bolt shot bouncing off of a hallway’s walls and degrading into smaller blobs of material.

The video also gave a quick peek at the sound team’s visit to a chemistry lab to record the neat noises made from various chemical reactions and a more dramatic fly-through look at the Banu Defender’s interior. All of that can be found in the embed below.

Reach exceeds it’s grasp. And not in the good way.

Effects like this have been done before but at the cost of performance. The important part here is the statement that they’ve figure out a way to create volume particle collision with out taking big a performance hit. Mr. Ghost, you may want to get that burning sensation checked out.

I was surprised to see just how CPU intensive SC is I literally doubled my FPS when I upgraded my CPU.

sc is heavily reliant on cpu, ram and ssd. which having an ssd is pretty much a requirement, while it benefits heavily from newer beefier CPUs and 32gb of ram.

my buddy plays with literally less than 8gb of physical ram installed with a 47xx something i7 but he has it on an ssd so he can still manage to sort of play or something or so he claims (his idea of playability may be inconsistent with others :D)

but yeah cpu upgrade to an i7 made in teh last handful of years or a decent zen 2 cpu would definitely see an appreciable boost to fps from reasonably older stuff.
