Co-op roguelike Minecraft Dungeons is live today on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and the Switch

Don’t tell my kids, but I’m getting them Minecraft Dungeons this week. I mean, really I’m getting myself Minecraft Dungeons this week, but they’re going to steal my Switch as soon as they see it and probably have a lot more fun with it than I will, so that’s pretty much the same thing.

Yep, the new multiplayer-optional Minecraft roguelike spinoff is live today on PC and all the major consoles, including the Switch.

“Bumped your head recently and can’t remember what the deal is with this game? Well, put down that iron pickaxe and grab a proper weapon, because the Arch-Illager is on the loose – and it’s up to you to save the world from his evil plan! Inspired by classic dungeon crawlers, Minecraft Dungeons allows up to four players to team up – online or in the living room. It retains the original game’s blocky charm, but instead of mining and crafting, you will be fighting and exploring through action-packed, treasure-stuffed, and wildly varied levels to defeat relentless swarms of new-and-nasty mobs.”

VG247 has a roundup of review scores from some of the big mainstream sites; it’s faring decently though not spectacularly so far.

It’s alright.

If I didn’t get it as part of the game pass probably wouldn’t have thought it was worth it.

Not sure where “roguelike” comes from. The game doesn’t have perma-death, isn’t turnbased and is not set on a grid.

Three hours in and I’m having a great time. Kudos to them for some fun gameplay.

It’s a nice game that isn’t going to light any fires in the genre but it’s still fun enough.

I imagine lots of folks are going to compare it with Diablo / POE and it’s going to come up way short against those games but I think you are kind of missing the point too if you do that.

To me it’s more akin to Trove or maybe even Gauntlet if you are going old school. There is some depth with enchantments and you can make it somewhat hard too but it’s really meant to be a fun to romp with friends through a familiar Minecraft world.

They do nail the Minecraft asthetic really well while adding more details but still keeping the feel. To be honest wished they leaned into Minecraft even more.

Slight spoilers early in the game you get a base camp and it’s absolutely screaming out to me to be decorated but sadly that is not at all possible. Which to me is a great shame and a missed opportunity for sure.

Been playing it on and off throughout the day. I think I am nearly done for the first playthrough on normal (2 more difficulty levels in addition to normal).) I expect a lot of folks will burn through this because it’s not a long game and I do hope some more flesh is added to the bone in the future.

Still for £16 it’s fun enough and a nice distraction even if only for a short while.

The comparison to Trove and Gauntlet feels spot on. Content wise it feel like Diablo 1

From what I’ve been reading this is way too short on content for the $$$. Hytale will crush this.

It’s a $20 (US) game not $50/60. Tons of fun for a cheaper game.

Wait… so games that use blocky “minecraft” like graphics automatically puts them into the same type of game basket?

Minecraft Dungeons is an ARPG

Hytale is a huge, open world, sandbox, creative game.

They are two entirely different genres of game, that each share blocky graphics.

Apples and Oranges.

Minecraft Dungeons doesn’t even allow building. According to one of the replies above and also one of the reviews you can’t even customize your camp. Minecraft Dungeons is way closer to Torchlight 3 or Path of Exile than it is to Minecraft or Hytale. It’s aiming for a way different target audience than T3 or PoE though, so I’m not sure even *those* would be direct competitors.

Hytale is owned by Riot and I don’t do Riot so for me, The Minecraft game Auto-Wins.

Well that’s the great thing about Game Pass.
