The Daily Grind: Do you want to see hygiene monitors in MMOs?

I’m talking about in-game character hygiene monitors, mind you. Presumably you can monitor your own real-life hygiene. I don’t know, I’m not your mom.

We all teased Star Citizen quite a bit last year about proposals for toilet-usage in the game, which is obviously the kind of realism people playing a space sandbox are craving. While the game isn’t actually planning a “stank-o-meter,” as MOP’s Chris lovingly dubbed it, our commenters went to town talking about the potential for poop monitors and negative-effects for not washing your hands. (Wash ya damn hands.)

The real question is not how much the game is going to penalize you for not putting on your +5 CHA deodorant but rather… do you even want this in the first place? Do you want the fuss of dealing with basic hygiene? Should sandbox MMOs be worrying about functioning potties and showers? Should an MMO dev have to put on her resume that she wrote the script for debuffing player toons for “holding back a boom-boom”? (I swear these terms are Chris’ fault.) Do you want to see hygiene monitors in MMOs?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
