MOP’s Carlo was chatting about the modern endgame situation in World of Warcraft the other day and I had a sharp realization that I got much more clear-headed about MMOs after I left them (or after they sunsetted). Sometimes when you’re in an MMO, you might feel something isn’t quite right, but there’s so much being thrown at you (shinies! loot! cosmetics! leaderboards! login perks! cheevos!) to keep you around that you shake it off and keep on keeping on. For me, being surrounded by friends was usually enough to smother my doubts about a game’s development and future. My desire to play with them kept me going. And when they left… I usually did too.
And then sometimes in the void after we left – or after we were shoved out by a sunset – I could see much more clearly that the game itself couldn’t hold up on its own (or that it could hold up for me without my mates after all!).
What about you – do you leave MMOs when your friends do?
