Star Citizen highlights alpha 3.23’s updates to FPS reloading, recoil, and aiming

There are a lot of times when players of Star Citizen need to clamber out of their favorite internet spaceship in order to get into some FPS combat, and making that combat feel more impactful is a focus for the game’s alpha 3.23 as well as this week’s Inside Star Citizen video, which shows off some of these shooty updates.

Changes to the FPS experience include the ability to pull ammo clips out of a backpack (at the cost of a much longer reload time), the ability to consolidate ammo in a backpack, improved crosshair functionality that tracks where a weapon’s barrel is pointing, better views and additional zoom rates through scopes and aim down sights (ADS), and a whole lot more recoil to account for.

These adjustments are all in service of balance, gunplay feel, and fun, so for those who have lots of shooting to do around the ‘Verse would probably do well to look at some of these changes in action.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $650M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
