Work on the medieval persistent war MMO Anvil Empires continues, which means that once again developer Siege Camp is providing another monthly development update to show off some of the new and adjusted features that have been completed thus far.

First, the post provides a look at the Underworld, a subterranean portion of the game world that promises new threats, new materials, and a mining game. A first pass of this new portion of the world is promised for the MMO’s next test in the form of underground caves that can be accessed from randomly generated entrances on the surface. There won’t be many things that can be built beyond storage chests and hand carts, but players will want to bring torches since the Underworld is completely devoid of light.

The next major part of the preview post is related to combat: Multiple attack chains are being developed, with the first being offered to the sword weapon; alternate weapon modes are being worked on, with the bow getting one such mode first; multiple collision points for melee strikes are being tried out; weapon attack speed is being scaled to stamina; and shield drops while attacking are being developed.

Siege Camp has also introduced territory control mechanics for the first time, dividing the game map into territory based on starting deployment points and Tier 3 town placement, with the latter holding more weight and being the way players expand their held land. This new system will subsequently mean that beacons and homesteads can only be built in friendly territory instead of on the front lines as an offensive bulkhead, which is obviously against the game’s intended design.

Finally, some smaller but important updates are noted in the post, specifically the addition of a catapult and the ability to map weapons to hotkeys. As for Siege Camp’s other (and fully released) war MMO Foxhole, that’s gotten only two updates, but those updates are significant in their impact as they add new naval vessels like submarines and a logistics craft, bringing back the ability for water bodies to freeze, overhaul facilities to make them easier to manage, and apply a list of quality-of-life updates.
