As regular readers know, it’s not our policy to report on emulators for MMORPGs that are actively running, and there are few that are more actively running than World of Warcraft. Still, this news is about account protection, so just this once we’re going to ignore protocol in the interest of helping genre fans stay informed of a potential security risk.
The operators of the emulator Turtle WoW have reported a hack of its account database, which got them access to encrypted passwords and email addresses of register players; no character data was seized in the attack.
“It is our responsibility to inform you all the risks, even if login details were not stored in plaintext,” the announcement reads in part. ” While passwords are encrypted and hashed, it is still encouraged to exercise caution and change your login information anywhere it was used.” We’d say that’s pretty good advice in general, but anyone who perhaps was part of this emu may want to follow through on that suggestion now.
