Star Citizen takes a look at the space stations, asteroid bases, and FFA PvP of alpha 4.0’s Pyro system

Star Citizen’s weekly video series is now starting to look past alpha 3.24 and towards alpha 4.0, especially the addition of the game’s second star system, Pyro. And while this week’s episode doesn’t provide any release timing yet, what it does offer is a look at some of the unique places and activities Pyro is going to offer.

In addition to existing mission types like mining, bounty hunting, and cargo hauling that Stanton offers now, Pyro will offer up the FFA PvP area known as the contested zone. This area is just next door to the game’s more public (and safe) social zones and promises players an experience similar to classic overworld MMO dungeons. Specifically, there will be plenty of unique loot to find, but players will have to contend with PvE enemies, booby traps, and of course, other players who are roaming the zone.

Another feature unique to Pyro is procedurally generated asteroid bases, which will often feature on-foot and ship combat, the potential for even more loot, and needed objectives for missions that players take up. These are mostly smaller scale but are no less dangerous than the contested zone.

The video also offers an overview of the wide assortment of space stations that players will find, many of which provide services similar to those one would expect like weapons shops, food kiosks, and missions to take up. There’s plenty of things to ogle in the video waiting below, in other words.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $700M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
