Elder Scrolls Online expounds on the design of U44’s new player companions

ZeniMax Online Studios has previously introduced its two upcoming Elder Scrolls Online companions through lore pieces; now, the team is going in-depth on the mechanical and conceptual design of these characters.

ZOS says that Tanlorin, a High Elf tankmage who uses they pronouns, represents the first time that the studio has repeated a class for a companion (Bastian was also a Dragonknight). But Tanlorin’s version is combined with Soul Magic, giving them a very different playstyle from the previous companion. As for their story, it’s meant to be a “callback” to older High Elf themes, as Tanlorin is an “outcast” from Summerset.

“Players may find it interesting to hear that Tanlorin’s story reflects and builds on certain themes embedded in the original Aldmeri Dominion questlines,” says ZeniMax’s Andrew Sianez-De La O. “We wanted their story to both feel like a callback to the questlines that shaped the Dominion as well as a platform for what comes next and who gets to play a role in shaping that future.”

Zerith-Var is the other companion, and he is neither a typical Khajiit nor a typical Necromancer. “In a way they’re almost polar opposites, with Tanlorin’s story rooted firmly in the ‘present’ of the Second Era,” writes ESO loremaster Michael Zenke. “And Zerith-var’s narrative is shedding light on a time lightly explored in Elder Scrolls games before.”

ZeniMax further explains that these companions have evolved with player feedback.

“This approach shines through in many areas, not least of which is the special perk available for each Companion when they are active—or after a player has fully earned their trust. Working with Tanlorin unlocks Tanlorin’s Finesse, which makes lockpicking and forcing locks easier and more efficient. Meanwhile, those who keep Zerith-var at their side benefit from Zerith’s Guidance, marking the presence of resource-filled Heavy Sacks out in the world.”

The companions launch alongside update 44 – October 28th for PC and Mac, November 13th for console – free for subbers or bought a la carte for everyone else.
