The Daily Grind: What legendary MMO event wasn’t actually that great in the first place?

Time, nostalgia, and rose-tinted memories can alter our perception of notable events. Sometimes even false memories trickle into our heads, reshaping history itself to us. And as an amateur MMO historian myself, I’ve discovered that this is certainly true in regard to past events that we’ve reshaped over times to be more incredible or enjoyable than they actually were.

The example that comes to my mind is the original opening of the Gates of Ahn’Qiraj back in late 2005 and early 2006. It’s now this incredible piece of World of Warcraft history, but it felt anything but incredible at the time. It was a huge boring grind fest followed by a letdown of a zone-wide battle that was characterized by slideshow-like performance — and all to open up raids that a lot of us weren’t in the position to play.

Are there any other examples that come to your mind of “legendary” occasions in MMO history that weren’t actually quite as amazing as we make them out to be today?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
