Do you remember Frozen Flame? It’s OK if you forgot because things have been extremely quiet for the multiplayer survival RPG. Readers will remember that developer Dreamside Interactive crowdfunded the title on Fig in 2020 and kept moving through various test phases until an early access launch two years later, after which updates began to tail off until a roadmap post last year and an open alpha for a new update this past May; it’s been mostly radio-silent ever since.
So whatever happened to this game? According to a message from an August message from the game’s director shared by the official Discord’s moderator, development has slowed down to a significant degree: He confirms that work on the title is being done on a voluntary basis, states his belief that negative feedback and criticism is holding the project back, and claims that funds provided by publishers Ravenage Games and 2P Games were fully allocated while sales revenue is being used to recoup the publisher’s costs. He also cites “the current crisis in the industry” and the effects of the Ukraine invasion (recall that Dreamside Interactive is based in Cyprus) as reasons for a lack of wider funding.
Meanwhile, Dreamside’s founder Serge Korolev has since gone on to found a new studio known as Misterial Games, which is working on a pair of horror titles. As for Frozen Flame, Steam user reviews are warning others away claiming that the game is abandoned. And for all general intents and purposes, that appears to be correct.
