Don’t look now but Final Fantasy XIV is getting an official mobile adaptation. Publisher Square-Enix and developer Tencent-owned Lightspeed Studios have taken the wraps off Final Fantasy XIV Mobile, an upcoming mobile MMORPG that seeks to condense the original experience of the MMORPG into a mobile format.
“In FFXIV Mobile, you are beckoned by the Mothercrystal, carrying the light of hope to the world of Hydaelyn. Heed the Mothercrystal’s call, embrace your destiny as an adventurer, and confront the primals to deliver Eorzea from certain destruction. An epic story and endless challenges await, with every heart-wrenching moment creating unforgettable memories within this vast realm.”
The mobile MMORPG will offer the game’s original five base races and nine different jobs to choose from, as well as the armory system that lets players swap to different jobs with the tap of a button. Content promised for the game includes a recreation of A Realm Reborn’s encounters and story along with activities at the Gold Saucer and gathering and crafting from the original title. The game also stresses a lack of “imposed social goals or forced engagements” with others to let players experience the game solo or with others at their leisure.
FFXIV Mobile will enter testing in multiple regions before its launch in mainland China, which will take in player feedback before its planned global release sometime later. No other details about its release, its monetization, or testing timing has been provided.
Fans of FFXIV are already losing their minds with anger over the reveal, with many assuming the mobile version is draining development resources from the original MMORPG, bracing for the worst in terms of monetization, and wondering aloud who asked for this. But one way or the other, this is indeed happening.
