If you’re a seasons kind of player in League of Legends, then the next year is going to be bringing a whole lot of change for you, with updates to ranked, details about the first season’s theme, and what seasons will look like moving into the rest of 2025.
The new year will see three seasons launch, with an overarching narrative, individual themes for each season, and specific themed content like skins, gameplay updates, modes, mini-games, and champions. Overall updates include client visuals themed around the season, updates to the battle pass to make it simpler and more rewarding (particularly for the free pass), and refinements for other rewards.
Season One will be themed around Noxus with an updated map, a new epic monster, and the addition of Feats of Strength, a best-of-three system that encourages teams to fight over specific objectives for buffs. The first season will also have tweaks to nexus turrets, teleport, and runes, along with some ranked play updates that include a single rank reset at the top of the year and a variety of tweaks to rank placement logic.
That’s not to suggest that LoL will only be about seasons. The MOBA is also debuting swiftplay, which Riot Games calls “a lower stakes way to experience the game” with small adjustments like more gold and XP granted as a match progresses, gold and XP rewards that adjust based on how far behind a character is in relation to others, fewer rewards for steamrolling players, and increased timing for map events like turret and baron spawns. This mode will replace quickplay in Season One.
