The Daily Grind: What older MMO’s graphics still hold up today?

The other night I was playing with some friends in Dungeons and Dragons Online, and the discussion turned to — oddly enough — the game’s graphics. Now, nobody would ever argue that DDO boasts the highest polygon count or realistic visuals, but we all came to the conclusion that it was still good-looking in its own slightly stylized way. And some of the zones and skyboxes definitely drew us into the world!

Some MMOs have aged poorly in the visual department, but others are mature beauties in their own right. Titles like Guild Wars, Lord of the Rings Online, and Ryzom all pop up in my mind when I think about MMOs that had a fantastic art style and still bring the eye candy in 2019.

What do you think? What older MMO’s graphics are still enjoyable today?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
