The Daily Grind: What’s your most petty MMO pet peeve?

Today’s Daily Grind was inspired by LOTRO blogger Fibro Jedi, who tweeted about personal space: You know how sometimes you’ll be standing in an MMORPG at a vendor or bank or crafting station or flight NPC, and someone will come up and just… stand right on top of you and clip with your toon and not move? FJ gently chided people who do that – and you know what, it annoys me too.

I do make allowances for older games and lagged people; for example, in Star Wars Galaxies rogue servers, if you’re running more than one character at a time, it becomes very clear how much lag time there is between how you’re piloting your character from your own client and how your character appears on other screens. Like five seconds sometimes, more than enough time for people to not realize you’re standing there and occupy the space themselves. Not all games experience quite the same lag time, though, and after those seconds, well, it’s pretty dang obvious that you’re standing on someone else and spoiling the view. I find I am particularly annoyed by it when I’m locked into an animation that’s going to take multiple minutes – like cooking, which is what FJ is doing in his pic. I could just move myself, but that’d stop my craft, and grrrr.

Obviously, it’s not really the end of the world, but it’s still a minor annoyance that helps wreck game immersion. And I’m sure it’s not the only one out there, so tell me about your most precious and silly and petty MMO pet peeves!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
