January’s update on the Star Wars Galaxies Legends Omega rogue server is a small but important one as the player developers have officially put into action their previously announced plan to bar specific mods and mod types from the game.
The game now by default bars mods that change the game’s terrain, footstep sounds, collision, animations, and interior layouts, all in an apparent attempt to tamp down on players abusing such mods in PvP (for example, altering footstep sounds to reveal cloaked characters). Modders of such files are, however, still able to petition to have their innocent mods formally approved and included as part of the client’s mod manager. And of course, basic texture mods (like the ones I’ve built for myself and the multitudinous UI mods) are still fine. And if you’re wondering, the popular Shattered Republic Overhaul is indeed on the safe list.
“You can still use/make client mods for the game,” the devs write. “We want to assure everyone that we are not against mods—we are proud of the creativity mods bring to the community.”
Finally, the team has released a recap video for 2024 trekking through all of the updates and events of the year, flush with player screenshots. Frankly, it’s more than even I remember happening over the year year. Around the 1:14 mark, the video even flips through a bunch of the news articles we did on the game – again, more than I remember writing! There’s a reason it’s been a fan favorite for so long.
