Betawatch: The soft launch of Revelation Online (March 10, 2017)

Revelation Online departs the hallowed halls of Betawatch this week, having emerged from closed beta into open beta. No more wipes are planned, and the game is now freely accessible, making the My.com import well and truly soft-launched. Fly free, my pretty! What else happened in the world of MMO betas this week?

  • Elder Scrolls Legends dumped the beta tag entirely and is now officially launched on PC.
  • Shards Online is getting a name change ahead of its planned Steam early access launch. You may now refer to it as Legends of Aria.
  • The Repopulation’s alpha is expected to resume this weekend under the new ownership. Welcome back, Repop! Don’t screw this up!
  • Gigantic just cannot catch a break: It laid off a sizable portion of its staff with the aim of “reducing the burn rate” until it can emerge from open beta and land on Arc later this year.
  • Project Gorgon tasked players with testing dungeon difficulty.
  • Camelot Unchained is still teasing its long-delayed beta one, but it sounds as if we’re inching closer now.
  • Albion Online is pushing out a big patch next week, heavily overhauling the beta.
  • Crowfall is working toward 24-7 test servers.
  • LawBreakers is planning a big beta weekend later this month. Breakin’ the law!

Follow along below for the complete list of all the games still on the grill.

As always, we consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s usually under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed; we also do not list expansions, with occasional exceptions.

So I figured I would play Revelation Online with the control scheme like GW2 and have found some fun. However, the first half hour is killing me with the on rails story quests with quicktime events. And as I get past the prologue it looks like the rest of the chapters are going that way too.
Such a waste of decent potential.

Yeah, I heard it is basically a good ten plus hours of rails. The ‘tutorial thing is way too long’ as one of my friends put it.

Man this was my problem with the game to.

Life is Feudal closed access to the servers per the plan this Friday (3:00 P.M. UTC) and is working on fixes for reported issues.

Oddly enough, I didn’t actually happen to have any PvP happen across the couple of weeks of testing. I got attacked by wolves, and did die from porting to my home and falling from the sky to kill myself on the roof (on of those issues) but I didn’t actually have a single hit dealt or taken in PvP. I know some people who did, but even with effectively announcing where I was going to be going back and forth nobody really bothered.

Mostly the PvP types were too busy fighting each other, and you only died from them if you did something really dumb (like insult or attack their war bands.) There were a couple big battles of at least 100 players (not bad for an early beta!)

Anyway, moral of the story… the roof on my little hut was the most dangerous thing in game for me.
