The Stream Team: Diablo III is a game we are playing

16

Diablo III and its ilk are normally safely tucked away in our Not So Massively column, but this month’s Choose My Adventure is offering OARPGs (online action role-playing games) a chance at center stage. Tonight, MassivelyOP’s Stream Team dives into the dark world of Diablo III to get a taste of OARPGs in action and to establish what makes this genre so darn popular. Join Mike Foster at 7:00 p.m. EDT on OPTV for all the Witch Doctoring you can handle.

What: Diablo III
Who: Mike Foster
When: 7:00 p.m. EDT on Monday, March 9th, 2015

Enjoy the show!

The show is over now, but we’ve embedded it here just for you. Don’t forget to check out our past streams too!

MikedotFoster ChristopherPierce That makes sense.

ChristopherPierce This is a thing I don’t usually do in streams but do on my own. With only an hour or so to explore a game, I usually opt for progression over exploring. It lets us check out more of the game.

Ironwu The original Diablo 3 game is pretty stale at this stage and deserving of most of the original criticisms it faced.  Low mob density and a predictable and fairly bland story line to downright Snidely Whiplash villain tropes in Act 4.  I couldn’t fault anyone who only had the trial experience or who had the original game for not wanting to continue to play it.
However…the features introduced in Reaper of Souls are a completely different game from this.  The first major feature is the “Adventures and Bounties” mode which actually in many cases doubles or triples mob density so everywhere you go there’s tons of packs of demons of hell to carve through.  Once unlocked, you never have to go back to story mode ever again even in new seasons.  Each act has 5 random bounties you complete for an act reward and you do them primarily for “Rift Keys.”  These Rift Keys actually open up a portal in town to randomly generated map content.  While many maps are re-used and you will noticed patterns and room design that’s honestly true of every random map generator and was true for D1 and D2 as well.  Inside there is plenty of mob density and Champion and Elite packs that once enough have been killed a Rift Guardian spawns.  This Rift Guardian always drops a Forgotten Soul (used for crafting such as re-enchanting stats on gear to other stats) and has a chance to drop a Greater Rift key.  Greater Rifts are timed Rifts that drop no loot in them until the final Rift Guardian spawn which almost always drops a few legendaries.
There are other features as well, such as a previously mentioned enchanter (to transmog gear looks as well as change a single stat on gear), sockets and special gems for jewelry, and seasonal play which ranks Greater Rift performance on leaderboards.

ChristopherPierce That’s why I love skills like the Wizard’s Ice Armor / Frozen Storm rune .. constant whirling damage all around me, the monsters don’t seem to notice it but it breaks ALL THE BARRELS!

MikedotFoster BalsBigBrother well as I said some do disguise it better than others and I agree its not one of D3’s strong points but it does improve in variety a little as you move through the chapters and get further into the game.  As an introduction / trial to the game it is not a good one,  more so when you solo it. Its a shame that no one was able to join (as I was hoping to) as that does help make the experience a little more fun and it seems a bit silly to have such a restriction in place in the first place but hey its Blizzard so /shrugs

Ironwu there is a lot more to the game and what Mike shows in the stream is barely scratching the surface, it does have more variety as you move through the story line.  Though most people do only run through the story once as a means to an end to unlock other quicker ways to improve your character, via loot and paragon levels.
That said if you didn’t enjoy D2 there is nothing really any different other than updated visuals and more variety in the boss fights so as you say it may just be the game is not for you, which is ok too :-)

Mike, thanks for streaming this.

I only got about half way through before I sort of zoned out on the sameness of it all.  I understand that it gets more complex in some ways as one advances.  But, I don’t know.  I played through D1 at least twice, and part way on a 3rd class.  Tried D2 and did not like the design that much.  Have tried D3 free trial and seen some streams.  Guess D3 is just not for me.  Am glad it is a good fit for those that like it, though.  :)

It’s weird seeing you walk past vases and such. I absolutely have to break every single breakable item in an arpg and it is difficult to see someone not do it. When I play DDO I scour every single corner of a dungeon looking for barrels to break. Because there’s things that I might miss out on. Like arrows I don’t use. lol

Interesting game, Diablo. I’m not sure though I could get into it due to certain aspects I don’t care for. Controls being a biggie for me and I’m not a big fan of how the moment controls work with the mouse. Also Mike you didn’t appear to have any real challenge on anything that you did in the dungeon, whether bosses including the end fight with the Skeleton king or just masses of mobs. It felt rather simple and repetitive in nature rather quickly, the combat for sure was boring with most of the attacks being done with the blowgun spam. :(

Artwork, yeah it felt like Blizzard really took a lot of shortcuts in regards to room assets and room/fixture painting. :( Blizzard really short changed the free to play trial accounts and in a bad way. I’m a fan of subscription as the best overall business model for a lot of reasons. That said I think free to play trial accounts are a good thing, gives players a chance to get a look at how game play etc feel/look. Blizzard needs to improve how theirs operate, because they blow whether its Diablo or  WoW.

Anyhow thanks for the stream Mike, was interesting to see how the game plays. I look forward to watching the Marvel game when you play that. The wife and I backed the Kickstarter, awesome that you all made your stretch goal. :) I’m hoping you all get into place a good system that allows you all to maintain the site with a decent on going cash flow to support whatever you all decide to do with the site. The wife and I are doing the Patreon system for Blizzard Watch as well, to help them continue. We’re fans of such websites

Good ole genetic gifts. heh. Unfortunately high cholesterol doesn’t run in my family as a genetic gift, would be nice if it was though!  I just need to tone down some types of eating and get back to being more active. The last decade I’ve slowed down  majorly as old injuries really started to trouble me. I need to keep working those areas of my body otherwise they’ll get worse. Add to that the arthritis in the various joints is getting worse too, which makes me tend to baby them as well. Vicious circle I tell ya!

Anyhow stress tests, radioactive isotopes all that sort of fun stuff, all to make sure that it’s ok for me start really upping the ante in regards to physical activities. :) As I said, I don’t want to end up like Jim Fixx. So I want to make sure the off and on chest aches weren’t serious. Looking pretty good after this latest round of tests, figure I don’t need to start taking any drugs for it.  (now back to being amused by Mike and his troubles with the time change. lol.) And yeah hopefully I’ll be around for a few more decades.  :)
